Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

They're using a new piece of interesting tech for the Project A-ko bluray called the Domesday Duplicator, which will scan several different laserdisc releases to compile the best footage possible to use for restoration. It sounds like a lot of work, but very fascinating! I'm looking forward to seei...

and....a new, remastered release of Project A-ko on bluray for the first time ever!

Oh wow. Did they manage to find a 35mm print of Project A-Ko or is this another restoration job of existing materials?

Re: What are you Watching?

Contrasted with Zeta - which started pretty serious and got more serious as the series went on, and the original, which was only unintentionally funny, ZZ is really jarring with how much comedy was in the beginning. It's reputation as "nothing but comedy" is overblown but a lot of that is probably ...

Re: What are you Watching?

Recently finished Gundam ZZ for the first time. It definitely improved as the show went on. I know I'm in the vast minority here, but I enjoyed it more than Zeta. I found Judau to be more likable than Kamille -- or at least less prone to random mood swings. Also watched 8 Man After, which is now av...

Re: How big was Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs?

That makes me want to ask this: Which genre was big among children and young teenage in the 1980s? Science-fiction? Action? Fantasy? Is there any general formula to make a successful television series that translated well to selling toys? Rattling off the big names in the 80-- there was He-Man, Vol...

Re: How big was Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs?

It was not nearly as big as Voltron or Robotech, or as ubiquitous as the 80s Astro Boy. Trust me, during the 80s I seeked out every "Japanese style" cartoon on North American TV and Saber Rider was not a show that had much buzz at the time. I would say in terms of popularity it was around the same l...

Re: Your memories of anime theatrical release?

This one's a toughie. While I have dim memories of watching an anime in a rep theatre back in the late 80s, I couldn't really tell you for sure what anime it was. It may not even have been in Japanese or english, but some other language dubbed over it (either Cantonese or something else).

Re: What are you Watching?

Finally finished Little Princess Sara. As far as WMT shows go, it's one of the best from the 80s...but still a significant step down from their 70s shows. Though much of the fault lies with the source material, which has displays some of the problems with Victorian literature in that they often rely...

Re: Series you think that should had been bigger in the West?

The Golgo 13 series is faithful to the comic, in both the good and bad ways. The anime movie is therefore the much more casual-appealing intro to the franchise.

Re: What are you Watching?

Yes! I'm getting around to the 3rd season now. Just a really surprisingly well done show.
