Re: Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Dies at 68

Too young, man. I don't really have much else to add. While I was never a big DBZ fan to the degree many modern and millennial anime fans are, his art was all over video games, ads, posters. One of the most recognizable art styles anywhere.

Right Stuf store 'merging' with Crunchyroll

News is 2 days old now but it's still a hard pill to swallow for fans of physical media. I don't expect the same prices and sales to occur after the merger.

Re: What are you Watching?

Of all the "original" Netflix anime shows I've seen, Hi-Score Girl has been my favorite so far. (I'm still slowly making my way through Great Pretender) It probably is a show more catered for a specific generation of gamers though (which I was a part of). Interestingly, Hi-Score Girl is ac...

Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

I wonder why it took so long for Re: Cutey Honey to be released here. I mean, Anno directing Cutey Honey always seemed like an obvious get. Must have been entangled in rights issues for a long time, I guess.

Re: What are you Watching?

Watched and finished Gokusen last week. This is a 2004 series in the " tough unorthodox teacher a bunch of punkass kids grow to respect and love" category of anime, though this one's a female teacher. Overall a lighthearted series in a similar vein as Onizuka, which is probably why the ser...

Re: Which came out in the US first, Animeigo's MADOX-01 or US Renditions' Gunbuster?

Yeah, pre-advertised release dates aren't always reliable, especially when it comes to smaller companies like US Renditions and Animeigo were at the time. ANN lists US Renditions' Gunbuster as having been released on Feb 1, 1990. I'm not exactly sure where ANN gets their dates from, but it is a rath...

So indeed, the plot thickens...!

But yeah, I think magazine ads are probably the only way to confirm release dates. I wouldn't necessarily trust the memories of older fans. I certainly cannot remember details from even 12 years ago, let alone over 30.

You're positive about this? Then I guess the US Renditions Wikipedia page needs correcting.

Which came out in the US first, Animeigo's MADOX-01 or US Renditions' Gunbuster?

This question was brought to my attention today. On the US Renditions wikipedia page, it states that Gunbuster was the first subtitled anime home video release in the US, in early 1990. On Animeigo's website, it states that MADOX-01 came out in early 1989. The copyright dates on the VHS tapes also s...

Re: What are you Watching?

Pompo The Cinephile--I found it interesting to look up the reception it got after I finished this. It's either underseen or, at least within anime fan forums I've looked through, mixed reactions. I don't think it's a perfect film, yet it's doing something almost completely different from what you us...
