Re: The Anime Nostalgia Podcast & Blog

It's been hard keeping this one a secret, but Viz hired me to write a little about Maison Ikkoku to help promote the series re-release!! What an honor! You can see it on their instagram stories, but I also saved a video of it, too: https://twitter.com/bunnycartoon/status/1308899568118046721 A blog p...

Akira reaches it's 100th printing!

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-09-24/akira-volume-1-is-1st-kodansha-manga-to-get-100th-printing/.164392 What a milestone! Kodansha announces Akira vol 1 is the first title in it's catalog to ever reach 100 printings. I've been trying to see if I could find other titles that have achieved...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

Yeah, while there's still some old-school shops like that around, it's nice to know there's alternatives out there (or even places that cleaned up their act a little!) Ironically, I remember the comic shop in Pike Place in WA still carrying a lot of vintage adult manga releases right up until I move...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

Yup. When I lived in WA, I grew up with Seattle having what was known as "flesh alley" downtown--most of it's all gone now, and a lot of it had to do with both the internet becoming a thing and the general gentrification of the area. The marquee of The Lusty Lady (a 24 hour adult shop and strip show...

Re: 1987 catalog of dreams and VHS tapes

I think it really depended on 1. what the title was, 2. who was releasing it, and 3. when it was released. For example: When Criteron released Akira on LD in 1992, the retail price was $124.95: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/09372/CC1294L/Akira:-Special-Edition But then, when they released another e...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

Ah that might have been it! I'm sure it might have made an interesting footnote on news sites or in adult magazines at the time, but probably didn't leave any sort of lasting impression, lol.

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

I'm positive that there are people who collect older hentai/adult titles, but with the stigma attached to sex in the English speaking fandom spaces, they probably avoid talking about it publically. I definitely see collectors pay more on Ebay for vintage books and vhs tapes of those older hentai tit...

Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

They're using a new piece of interesting tech for the Project A-ko bluray called the Domesday Duplicator, which will scan several different laserdisc releases to compile the best footage possible to use for restoration. It sounds like a lot of work, but very fascinating! I'm looking forward to seein...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

I think the example Dave posted was (poorly) dubbed, iirc? I haven't seen that one myself, but it was pretty notorious back in the day. Ironically, that stuff SHOULD have been in the black-curtained-off-back-room-for-adults, but nope...they put it in the "special interest" section right next to the ...
