My Youth in Anime Mags
Or: How I stopped worrying and learned to love not being able to read Japanese. :) OK. 1980. I had read that 'catalyst point' Fred Patten article in the pro-zine 'Fanfare'. As part of my early self-education I was thrilled to learn there existed magazines in Japan that actually covered this fascinat...

Thank you very much! It does kind of seem like a global time-twisting reunion, doesn't it? Even people I don't know (or, maybe, don't remember, sadly) seem like yesterday.kndy wrote:Welcome Steve!!! Look forward to reading your post of your experiences from the past.

Re: Newtype Magazine - What was your first experience....
I will go into more detail elsewhere, but I was 'in' on the 'ground floor' when it first came out, and as was my nature I sought to find a mental classification for it, a reaction when I sorted material for my personal 'knowledge bank'. Newtype, above all else, was clearly 'style above substance'. T...

Re: Animag...why did they cease publication?
I don't think there was ever an official explaining, but I suspect being bought out and not getting any real distro was a factor. Could be key staff left as well, I seem to recall a decent sprinkle of old school C/Fo folk 'tribbing for a time. Might have been lack of advertising as well. I seem to r...

Re: The Lucky Finds bragging thread
I'm sure this would completely explode the more OCD of us but I pulled all the gimmies and carefully bagged or filed them by show as reference material. My Macross file is well over an inch thick, closer to two. Zeta Gundam came close to that. I also tended to give away posters and stuff to friends ...

Re: The Lucky Finds bragging thread
Did that Animage include all the bonus inserts? DAMN but the anime mags used to be just jam packed with cool stuff. Posters, Stickers, stationary sets, playing cards, more!
Seems so empty nowadays, last time I picked up a mag.

Ah, I see that our decks connect us as kindred spirits. ;) I do have some working top-loaders around here... I still use a lot of old, heavy video equipment regularly; it's a nice workout. Say, you wouldn't happen to still have any old tapes lying around by chance, would you? Might send me a privat...

Re: What are you Watching?
There's already a Figma Cobra out, that instantly went OOP and sick money is being demanded by those holding it in stock. I don't know what it is about Figmas but they seem to have crazy low production runs. I think I got very lucky grabbing my Tekkaman Blade. I'm hoping there IS a second release fo...
