Re: Zac Bertschy is dead

From the reactions I've been seeing this seems to have been completely out of the blue. I'm slightly bothered there seems to be no mention of the cause of death. I didn't often agree with his reviews (but his enthusiasm for 'Keep your hands off the film club!' was infectious and sold me on it 100%) ...

Re: Series you think that should had been bigger in the West?

For information, when Suncoast went belly-up in 2006, the bones of it were brought up by Transworld and merged with the FYE chain. Most of the Suncoast stores were closed but I was very surprised to see at AWA in Atlanta 2011, the nearby mall had a freshly opened Suncoast 'pop-up' store. A 'pop-up' ...

Re: Series you think that should had been bigger in the West?

I think what's being asked is, 'popular' as in Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, possibly Gundam Wing level of mass appeal.

Bootleg polyester club shirts and bootleg skateboard decks popular. :)

Re: Series you think that should had been bigger in the West?

Mmmmm I'm not sure your facts are in order regarding Lupin III internationally. I have the impression it's pretty big in Italy for example. Tetsujin 28 (which version?) and Golgo 13 are a very curious baseline for what you're asking. How did you come to choose these two titles? Dave will have someth...

Re: What ettiquette was there in the days of Usenet?

*shrug* I don't know if I would call it etiquette so much as reason and common sense and understanding civilized behavior. For the most part. I suspect the thrust of the question is really 'why is Twitter a hellswamp and USEnet was so nice?' and of course it's not that clear-cut. The difference I th...

Re: Pirating anime music in the 1980s

I can't remember any standard "types" for cassettes, usually every different brand would have various grades of tape. The TDK I taped those Yamato albums onto was a "SA" grade, as seen here cassette yamato.jpg I want to point out here how forward looking some of the tape makers ...

Re: Pirating anime music in the 1980s

I don't think I would use the term 'pirate' for music sharing circa the '80s. AFAIK there was never a network of people bootlegging music cassettes. Let us not forget that the music industry worked with the music publishing community to build a 'tax' into blank tape prices to cover 'lost revenue' du...

Re: How have the drawings changed over the years?

To me the most obvious change is the loss of the big, heavy, rough ink lines. The kind of rough slash on the cel done with ink and brush instead of the clean, fine line of the photocopy. Yes I know cels were always (or most always) shot from the pencils then painted, but that heavy line, inked over ...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

Off memory, Chad Kime went to work for Pioneer Laser Disc Co. which evolved into Geneon. He also had connection with Anime Expo in the mid 2000s.

Re: Japanimation Association of Michigan?

Since the leaflet mentioned Zeta Gundam, I would like to ask about how well-known and well-watched Gundam was before Wing Gundam was aired on TV? I understood that there were fan-sub of 0079 and Zeta Gundam in the 1980s, weren't them? Point of order. The ad mentions Gundam Double Zeta, aka ZZ Gunda...
