Re: What would modern fandom have looked like without the sci-fi community connection?

I think alot of what helped it grow as it did was something of disillusionment within sf fandom at the time. Ever since the first fanzines in the 30s, fans had always argued that sf wasn't all it could be, and better stories were needed, and again more so in the 60s with the New Wave and all. But in...

Re: New Book Idea - Thoughts and Suggestions Appreciated!

I'm sure, some time down the road from now, anime and manga fans of tomorrow would enjoy reading about what the times were like, of a fandom they're a part of, that's not perpetually everything late 80's and early Nineties, or as far back as the early 60's or 70's. New generations of fans are in th...

Re: New Book Idea - Thoughts and Suggestions Appreciated!

If you could get an interview with Joanne Ninomiya, that would probably be up there -- I think she's approaching 80. She was responsible for getting subtitled anime on to Hawaiian TV through KIKU. For fandom proper, I imagine the biggest issue will be old drama, similar to trying to do a history of...

New Book Idea - Thoughts and Suggestions Appreciated!

I hope all are doing well, and that everyone is staying safe and healthy as much as possible these days; hopefully a corner is being turned, but only time will tell. I wanted to post something about an idea I’ve had bouncing about in my mind for a few years now; with some recent projects wrapped up ...

Re: Older fans – what is your take on anime and anime fandom today?

I think there are some decent differences between "the old days" and the new, and like others have said, that doesn't necessarily mean one is good, and the other bad. I would argue, on some level however, that the fandom of the past had a bit more substance, in terms of participation, wher...

Re: Nothing of Consequence

I think that's a good point, about the "unknown fans." I can say I was never really a participant in fandom, aside from attending conventions, and being on the Animeigo messages boards and the CAML mailing list and whatnot. Partly, because there weren't many clubs around my area; and when ...

Re: Convention Appearances 2018

Unfortunately, I had something pop up at the last minute and had to miss Otakon this year (thankfully, brought to my attention before the 24 hour deadline to cancel hotel reservations, though). On track , as of now, at least, to hit Katsucon, though.

How was Otakon, this year?

Re: Rumiko Takahashi enters Eisner Hall of Fame!

I was really happy to see Rumiko Takahashi up for the Eisner Hall of Fame; as soon as I saw she was up for induction, I made sure my votes this year were in as I could, just to be on the safe side! An honor a long time coming!

My first thought was "Oh no": Hollywood Live-Action Gundam

https://www.newsarama.com/40681-suit-up-live-action-gundam-movie-on-its-way.html I can't imagine this going well, and I'm not saying that as a jaded anime fan (nah...of course not....) but more so I just don't think some things translate to live-action very well, and I personally don't think Hollywo...

Re: Convention Appearances 2018

Oh no, I certainly wasn't thinking the big shows, like Otakon, when I was writing that. Admittedly, most of the anime cons I've been to in recent years have been well below the 30,000 mark, if even reaching the 10,000 mark, so maybe my views are a bit skewed. I was at last year's Katsucon for a pane...
