Re: What are you Watching?
Been getting into Super High Speed Galvion, fansubs provided by Inka-Subs. I'm four episodes in and it seems to consist of people getting killed off or near death experiences. I happen to like the chemistry between the two main protagonist that ride/drive CIRCUS 1 car/robot. I've been doing an episo...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
Yeah, there was a small local chain of comic book stores (ok, they had like 2 locations) that had a Gunpla group that would meet and build monthly. I always intended to go but always ran into schedule conflicts. Something happened though because the group also kept moving their monthly meeting arou...

Re: New Slam Dunk anime film announced
I think to paraphrase a statement I heard Gerald from Anime World Order state regarding Toei and their animation shortcuts when they reviewed Dragonball Z Resurrection F: "If it came down to Toei having to quality animation in order to save the human race, we would be so screwed!" They can do amazin...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
The first stores I remember seeing with a lot of anime goods in were small, local retail stores that mostly catered to the import video game market. This was probably in 1995 or 1996. A lot of the mid-90s import video game advertisements in video gaming mags carried Japanese anime character goods, ...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
Say, didn't both Marvel and DC went into a rump in the 90s for reasons like the emergence of independent publishers? How did they bounce back anyway. And the Gundam novels really were a different beasts to the TV series. Tomino feels to me like he always need a strong-handed producer to rein him in...

Re: What are you Watching?
Been getting into Girls und Panzer. Really cute show. The english dubbing seemed kinda robotic at first, but it's gotten better since it feels each actress has gotten used to their character about halfway through the show.

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
That reminds me: When was the first time you guys saw a store that stock mostly anime character goods and other Japanese pop culture curios? Or the first specialized anime store for that matter. Did they sell stuffs licensed by Dark Horse and the likes in comic book stores back in the days? Suncoas...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
I went and checked Google and that store ("Players Choice?") in the North Myrtle Beach Mall is still there, and I think a new arcade opened up there as well? That's a pretty good store, lots of everything. Interesting in how a shop like that shows how Japanese animation has become such a part of Am...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
It's nothing like it was back in its glory days, before they knocked the Pavilion down; there was a time you could walk a solid twenty blocks of Ocean Blvd and there'd be an arcade cabinet in every block, if just a Ms. Pac Man in a motel lobby or a beat-up Galaxian next to the ticket booth of Dracu...
