Re: Photos from a 1979 C/FO LA meeting

I'm guessing "Banner the Squirrel" is Bannertail ? Programming choices are interesting too -- how did they decide what to play when? Banner the Squirrel was between Brave Raideen and Getta Robo G, for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07iM9PT-buE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs...

Re: Photos from a 1979 C/FO LA meeting

1979-12-15 CFO Bulletin_0000.jpg Not from October like the photos, but a couple of 1979 newsletters from February and December showed up on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/1979-02-cfo-monthly-screening https://archive.org/details/1979-12-15-cfo-bulletin/ I'm guessing "Banner the Squir...

Re: The CompuServe Anime and Manga Forum

Thanks for posting that. Just as an addendum, our Forum ran a few more years. We finally shut down in 2005 after a 20 year run. Mainly this was done because CompuServe was acquired by AOL, and AOL wasn’t interested in having the Forums anymore. So they let the contracts with the Forum owners langui...

Re: What are you Watching?

Watching OddTaxi -- this was a bit of a lucky break for me, as it was made by a new director and superficially looks like a furry anime. I think someone at ANN also noticed there was something else going on, as they got an interview with the director, who apparently is primarily a director of commer...

Is there a new-school equivalent of Dirty Pair?

I mean the "We're going for it and did something but it was kind of a disaster in a non-cute way, but we had to try, these costumes are riding up, but we'll try again" type anime. Maybe I am grossly misrepresenting Dirty Pair.

What would modern fandom have looked like without the sci-fi community connection?

The original C/FO having meetings at the LA Science Fantasy Society's clubhouse is part of the history now, but what if that connection had never happened? It's hard for me to imagine what a modern anime fandom would look like. The college anime clubs full of sci-fi loving STEM majors created the an...

Ted Delorme used to be on Twitter as ThatDarnTed, but gave it up a few years ago.

Re: How cheap are VHS nowadays and some other questions

VHS is very strange right now, I think. Most people see them as essentially worthless, because the thing on the VHS is now available in a higher-quality format. However, some people started using VHS clips for art projects, so VHS (especially anime VHS, it seems) is popular for this purpose. Sealed ...

Re: Computer viewing

Between VLC and MPlayer I'm usually able to work something out. :) Format-wise nothing too crazy, although I have noticed that there is a subsection of the remaining fansub world that insists on releasing and sharing rare shows in fussy custom formats, like 10-bit mkv files, or the "what's a di...

Re: New Book Idea - Thoughts and Suggestions Appreciated!

If you could get an interview with Joanne Ninomiya, that would probably be up there -- I think she's approaching 80. She was responsible for getting subtitled anime on to Hawaiian TV through KIKU. For fandom proper, I imagine the biggest issue will be old drama, similar to trying to do a history of ...
