Re: Has Japan or anime altogether lost its balls?
Is it just me or has seinen action anime been in decline for a while now? Jormungand, Canaan and Black Lagoon are the recent ones I can think of, but those kind of shows kind of drop once every 5 years, which is way too infrequently. I don't need all seinen action to be gunplay shows, but it seems ...

Re: What Does Japanese Animation Mean to You?
While I couldn't lump Winnie the Pooh with Bugs Bunny (the latter is fabulous humor, while the former is just a dumb facsimile of the original Pooh storybooks that are hilarious and witty), and while I really can't dismiss the likes of Iron Giant, I do feel a lot of the same emotions as you. I prob...

Re: Parasyte (Kiseijuu)
I read the original Mixxzine releases of Parasyte religiously back in the day and it quickly became and still remains one of my all time favorite manga easily. Top 10 material I'd say. I still go back to the manga every so often (the newer re-release from Del Ray, of all people, is nothing short of ...

Re: What Does Japanese Animation Mean to You?
I wish I hadn't left here for so long. Hi again. This has become something of a sore subject for me for quite some time now. The whole core reason and appeal of anime for me has over the course of over 25 years gone from a gateway into an unbelievably fantastic, wide open world of endless possibilit...

Re: Here I be
Poor Curtis. My apologies, my stray comment wasn't intended to lead us all around this particular mulberry bush, at least not here anyway. As fascinating of a discussion as this can easily be (since really, its the sort of dense topic we could easily be at back and forth for some time), this really ...

Re: Here I be
I'll be damned. Here's a colossal blast from the past if I ever saw one. You certainly don't know me Curtis, but I used to lurk on the rec.arts.manga & anime newsgroups back in the very early through mid 90's when I was in middle school. Among other users, I followed both your posts in general a...

Re: The Discotek appreciation thread.
Brain Trash, Haven't seen you on here in a while, but I was wondering if you could tell me about the two 999 DVDs that they've released. What are they? Movies? Compilations of the TV show episodes? It's such a long-running TV show, but I'd like to own it on DVD someday. The Discotek releases are on...

Re: Yotoden Versions
Assuming that those scenes are indeed unique to that one Japanese LD release, then they're not on any U.S. releases at least. CPM was the only North American distributor for Yotoden, and there are only two DVD releases from them (technically three, but the second is just a double dip of the first): ...

Re: What are you Reading?
Are you the same as me in thinking that the earlier part of HnK, before everyone grew up, is the better part? I think it should have ended after that first part, or maybe even earlier. It's been way too long since I read it for me to give any particular details, though. I remember something about l...

Re: The Best of the Best
To elaborate a bit on my thoughts on FFVII: what always especially stood out about it for me is that it easily has one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time. Definitely the best soundtrack among the Final Fantasy series I'd say (though VI's is also up there and more than gives it a run for it...
