Re: Is there a new-school equivalent of Dirty Pair?

A fun SF show with grownups doing adventure stuff that features stand-alone stories every episode? Not that I know of. Most anime shows these days either have continuing stories, are about people who die and find themselves elves in dungeons, or star young teenagers, or some combination of the three.

Re: Did comics from other countries receive the same kind of "localization" as manga in the early days?

Honestly I don't know that I would use the word "radical" to describe the changes made to manga and anime when imported into the US in the 1990s. Certainly nothing got altered the way Gatchaman did when it was turned into Battle Of The Planets in the 1970s, or the way Macross/Southern Cros...

Re: Some observations and questions about 80s cartoons

I recently talked to a French-Vietnamese who went to America in 1980s to study, and among other things we talked a bit about 80s cartoons. He raised some good points and questions that I would like to bring up here: 1. There was a lot of entertainment for children in the 80s, but there was also a d...

Re: Did comics from other countries receive the same kind of "localization" as manga in the early days?

I'm pretty sure that the Tintin we got in the United States was the same as Tintin in the UK, which is to say we got the same set of changes from the French version. I've never read Lucky Luke so I can't speak to that. I do have some UK reprints of American comics where American terms are changed to...

Re: What would modern fandom have looked like without the sci-fi community connection?

I think alot of what helped it grow as it did was something of disillusionment within sf fandom at the time. Ever since the first fanzines in the 30s, fans had always argued that sf wasn't all it could be, and better stories were needed, and again more so in the 60s with the New Wave and all. But i...

Re: What would modern fandom have looked like without the sci-fi community connection?

without science fiction fandom, it's hard to say what anime fandom - or modern fandom at all - would look like. The SF fans of the 30s and 40s built fanzines, self-published fiction, newsletters, fan clubs, and APAs. The SF fans of the 60s built connections with the mass media production companies a...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

Helen McCarthy suggested that there are some names which I should add to the list, which included Allyson and Dafydd Dyar, Debra and Ted Delorme, Vaunda K. Perry, Wendy Dinsmore, Rob Lantz, the Moriarty twins, and Beverley Headley Moriarty. Except for Vaunda K. Perry (thanks to an excellent obituar...

Re: How cheap are VHS nowadays and some other questions

I've seen five for a dollar VHS at some thrifts, and I've seen some crazy grandma pricing at some antique malls and shows. One vendor at Anime North was defending his insanely high VHS prices by saying that he does a lot of shows way out in the rural areas where people still use VCRs on a regular ba...
