Re: Former No-Name, Fanime staff

welcome to the board, Matt! I have never been to Fanime but that yard sale event sounds really attractive to me, the Bay Area being a hotbed of anime fandom for so long. I imagine a lot of fans are unloading a lot of interesting stuff.

Re: Hello everyone

BTW, I can't remember when AWA switched to full color badges, but it wasn't before 2000. Not for any big technical reasons, just because we were cheap. I know Dragoncon was doing full-color badges at some point in the 90s, which kind of caused a problem when the badge art wound up being reproduced i...

Re: Hello everyone

Welcome to the lounge! It's kind of low-key here most of the time but maybe we can get it a little busier!

Anime Central 1999 program book

I got an email from someone researching the early years of Anime Central, asking if I could scan in the program books for 1998 and 1999 - and I can't find my 1998 program book, but I do have the 1999 book. I scanned it in and it's up at the Internet Archive. So if you're interested in what a slick, ...

Re: What did old-school fans think about digital fansubs?

I still have VHS tapes I recorded in 1983 that are playable and haven't noticably degraded. Of course, I also had tapes I bought and recorded in the 1980s that died after three plays; sometimes they'd get chomped by a deck, sometimes the tape would snap right off the end of the reel after rewinding,...

Re: What did old-school fans think about digital fansubs?

I'm with you - the preservation game is strong, though right now I am not sure I am preserving too much beyond my own sentiments and nostalgia. I mostly agree that companies aren't really up for straight-up preservation, at least for preservation's sake, unless they can make some money off of it. I...

anne of green gables at Let's Anime

finally finished a new Let's Anime all about the 1979 Anne Of Green Gables series from Nippon Animation - you know, the one Isao Takahata directed and that Hayao Miyazaki did layouts on for 15 episodes, the one unavailable in Canada, that's the one - and you can read it here! https://letsanime.blogs...

VHS trading and fansubs in the modern era: Anime Herald

Anime Herald looks at the history of VHS fansubs in North America, and how the scene survives and thrives in the modern era! If you were ever wondering where that fansub of the Macross movie you watched at the anime club meeting in the back of the comic book store in 1986 came from, wonder no more. ...
