Re: Anime Expo Badge Collection

my understanding is that the staff of the 1991 AnimeCon split. One group started Anime Expo in 1992 in San Jose, and another group started Anime America in Santa Clara, which is right next to San Jose, in 1993. Anime America would be in the Red Lion in San Jose up until their last show in 1996, whil...

Re: Regarding the Archive of rec.arts.anime and Usenet

I have no idea whether or not there are missing parts to the rec.arts.anime archive. What I DO know is that there was a substantial part of anime fandom that wasn't on rec.arts.anime at all, and many conversations about anime and anime fandom were happening outside of the internet, which at the time...

Re: Apollo Smile!!!1!1!1

If you were in anime fandom in, say, 1997-1999 you might remember Apollo Smile, the Live Action Anime Girl! Well, she had two whole issues of her own comic book back in the day and they were pretty bad. In fact one might say they were... Stupid Comics. Which Mister Kitty certainly agrees with, beca...

Finally finished a probably way-too-long piece on the 1980 film PHOENIX 2772, the greatest film ever made about a genetically engineered space pilot and his transforming robot nursemaid/girlfriend versus the embodiment of the eternal universal life force! https://letsanime.blogspot.com/2024/10/space...

Re: How did old-school fans view the 1977 animated The Hobbit movie?

the Rankin/Bass Hobbit film aired on American network television at 8pm Sunday, November 27, 1977 on NBC. I can't remember if I saw it that night - it was up against "Six Million Dollar Man", which was a favorite of mine at the time - but I know I saw it on TV on another broadcast that I b...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

I think it would be really helpful to have something like an anime fandom wiki page - there are online pages that document fandom, like "fancyclopedia" (https://fancyclopedia.org/Fancyclopedia_3) and "fanac" (https://fanac.org) that are databases detailing convention dates, fanzi...
