Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
To the credit of these over-zealous, American fans of manga/anime, they were getting their first exposure to the some the best that this otherwise foreign medium had to offer -- at least in terms of fun-factor, which was relatively low in 90's, American comics. Even within the context of the Japanes...

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
I remember the 'Japanimation' section of my local Media Play (ca. mid-nineties) having entire rows of Ranma 1/2 vhs tapes, so early on the show struck me as something significant. (granted the volume of tapes was attributed to only one, two, maybe three episodes per cassette) This was, of course, ju...

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
The only other thing I don't like about Takahashi is her use of small, annoying-as-hell characters, such as Ten in UY and Happousai in Ranma. There's an even smaller character in IY, IIRC. He's a tick or some sort of blood-sucking insect. I never saw it much to really get annoyed though. However, i...

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
When the chapter is finished NEITHER of those two points comes to the prepared conclusion. BOTH items are promptly discarded by events of the chapter reverting to "status quo". I'm of the camp that prefers storytelling which leaves things up to reader. So in this case, I actually find Tak...

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
I'm going on a bit of a rant here--but, if you accept the notion that creativity comes out of adversity, then, Japanese women are among best manga-ka out there. Not only has Takahashi-san created some of the most iconic characters and addictive stories out there, but, in fact, the longest running an...

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
Our beloved Takahashi-san seems to have alienated many a long-time fan with all the above mentioned. However, does she still have the ability to draw in new audiences?
Given her longevity, I would have to assume--yes. (If only to repeat the vicious circle of creating more disgruntle fans

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
Apparently, this year marks the 35th anniversary of Takahashi-san's work.

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
By the way, which of Takahashi-san's character designs is everyone's favorite?
I'll have to go with Lum--so sexy, so iconic. That aside, I can still appreciate the call-back to Japanese myth with the Oni motif.

Re: Rumiko Takahashi --- The Godmother of this forum
It's clear from all the above comments that Takahashi-san is not immune to the predicament all artists encounter--namely, they reach an apex. But, if you're going to reach one it might as well be as high as hers.
