Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?

Speaking of Pac Man fever, weren't there video games at the arcades before Pac Man? You know, Space Invader, Battlezone, etc.? I wonder if Pac Man was the same deal as with modern-day "streaming-friendly" games like Among Us and Fall Guys--being just as fun to watch as to play? Also, does ...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?

there's a whole galaxy of imported Japanese toys, ceramics, knick-knacks, and collectibles that were exported from Japan starting in Occupation days that didn't really end until the rest of Asia's manufacturing capacity caught up in the 80s and 90s. Here's a Chicago Tribune article about it: https:...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?

And of course America was awash in Japanese electronics from the late 1950s onward, and made-in-Japan toys were in every toy department. Dave, could you please tell me more about the type of Japanese toys sold in American department stores at the time? Were they just generic toys or characters good...

Other Japanese cultural imports?

Beside anime, manga and music, what were the popular cultural goods people imported from Japan to the West in from 1970 to 2000? I've just read an interesting article talking about how the bubble economy helped to bring a lot of things from other cultures into Japan, and I just wonder if this exchan...

Tokyo Babylon gets a new anime adaptation! (Now canceled)

CLAMP's Tokyo Babylon will get a new anime adaptation in 2021 titled Tokyo Babylon 2021 Who are excited for this? I personally am. I hope that if this adaptation is a success, we will eventually have another shot at a X adaptation, which will force CLAMP to finish that series. What I am weary of th...

Re: Anime on CD?

There are probably home video industry statistics that would include anime titles, but I don't know of any anime-specific database. Which would be pretty amazing to see, actually. I know a lot of Japanese anime was released aimed at the children's video market in the early 1980s - the FHE releases ...

Re: Anime on CD?

I have a few anime titles - Slow Step, Plawres Sanshiro - released on VCD format that I picked up in various Chinese-community stores in the Toronto area. I have absolutely no idea if these were legal releases or not. I can remember seeing informercials for a Spanish-language VCD package - the play...

Anime on CD?

Playing Magic Knights Rayearth on the Sega Saturn makes me want to ask this: Has any anime ever been released on CD officially? When I came of age, all the anime were pirated on DVD. I wonder what kind of compression you would need to put anime on a standard CD?

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

I'm positive that there are people who collect older hentai/adult titles, but with the stigma attached to sex in the English speaking fandom spaces, they probably avoid talking about it publically. I definitely see collectors pay more on Ebay for vintage books and vhs tapes of those older hentai ti...
