Re: Let's Anime looks at the anime movies of 1981

Great article as always! Will you do another installment next year for 1982? Also, have you talked on your blog about designs from Dougram and other mecha anime of the time were "lifted" into Battletech? And I would like to ask if you remember when was the first time Doraemon came to Ameri...

You convention story?

Why don't we share our convention stories? Are there any interesting people, events, etc. that make you remember a convention for your entire life? When I visited Japan, my older brother dragged me to a cosplay convention in Yokohama. There was a raffle for visitors, and I won what seemed to be a fa...

Re: I Was A Teenage Anime Club President

Just curious, which shows popular back then like "Getta Robo" which people mostly got the title wrong? It reminds me of a recent splash in the Gundam community--for some recent, Netflix decided to use the ancient translation of "the Duchy of Zeon" for Hathaway's Flash.

Re: Did comics from other countries receive the same kind of "localization" as manga in the early days?

I'm pretty sure that the Tintin we got in the United States was the same as Tintin in the UK, which is to say we got the same set of changes from the French version. I've never read Lucky Luke so I can't speak to that. I do have some UK reprints of American comics where American terms are changed t...

Did comics from other countries receive the same kind of "localization" as manga in the early days?

We all know how companies like TokyoPop brazenly change the content of the manga they localized, but I just wonder if comics like other countries such as Tintin and Lucky Luke were also treated like this? Or were they translated more faithfully to the originals? I know that across the pond in Europe...

Some observations and questions about 80s cartoons

I recently talked to a French-Vietnamese who went to America in 1980s to study, and among other things we talked a bit about 80s cartoons. He raised some good points and questions that I would like to bring up here: 1. There was a lot of entertainment for children in the 80s, but there was also a de...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

Helen McCarthy suggested that there are some names which I should add to the list, which included Allyson and Dafydd Dyar, Debra and Ted Delorme, Vaunda K. Perry, Wendy Dinsmore, Rob Lantz, the Moriarty twins, and Beverley Headley Moriarty. Except for Vaunda K. Perry (thanks to an excellent obituar...

Living in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s

Could anyone who had lived in Japan in the 1980s and/or the 1990s share your experience with me? I've been curious about this topic for years, and I've been studying about the how the communal experience changes with economic up- and downturns. How was it like living through these two periods?

Re: How cheap are VHS nowadays and some other questions

I guess that most people don't let go of their anime DVD collection when Blu-Ray became a thing, right? People rarely buy any type of DVD anymore in my country, while music CD are mostly relegated to car entertainment systems.
