Re: Fred Patten RIP
While I am not aware of Mr. Patten until this thread, reading about his works has given me a sense of respect toward him. This was a man who lived, worked, and driven by his passion. That was not something many could make a claim for.

A collection of trailers from Manga Video UK
A channel dedicated to old OVAs has just uploaded this collection of trailers from Manga Video UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeAJ5caMAsU How exactly were these trailers distributed back in the days? The description said the trailers were from VHS tapes, so did they made tapes containing only t...

Anime being dubbed in English by Hong Kong/Taiwanese actors?
There are a number of old shows with English dubs being made by actors from Hong Kong and Taiwan, right? I can recall watching a dub like that of Techno Police 21C, but are there any other show which you remember? Also, when I talked with a friend through Twitter about this a few days ago, he mentio...

How to create an environment encouraging science fictions?
Excluding Japan, there is a distinctive lack of science fictions in East Asian and South East Asian literature, comics, films, animation, etc. in general, and more often than not original works called "science fictions" in these countries embody only the aesthetics and not the essential of...

Re: Did the Pokemon boom affected you?
One old American otaku I have had the fortunate speaking to talked about how his Tenchi Muyo group received a lot of new fans around 1999 who started with Pokemon before catching on with other anime. I wonder whether situations like these were universal or simply local phenomenon. If the later is tr...

How do companies store dubbing records?
Anything on magnetic tapes or records could degenerate with time if not properly stored, so I am curious about how companies store dubbing records, both back in the 1990s and nowadays. Do they have vaults/storage/closets for the records; or have everything, even the ones made back in 1990s, been dig...

Re: Classic, repetitiveness, and 90s OVA
Fireminer, I don't think OVA were "quickly forgotten". Some of them were, of course, but others became, well, classics. Vampire Hunter D, Bubblegum Crisis, and Giant Robo, to name three, were OVAs that were popular with anime fans before they were licensed in the West, and after they beca...

Re: Classic, repetitiveness, and 90s OVA
Just a stream of thought, but in the U.S. at least, there does not seem to be really strong repeated inter-generational communication between anime fans. Part of it might be cultural; in many circumstances it is considered somewhat inappropriate for people who have too wide an age gap to casually h...

Classic, repetitiveness, and 90s OVA
One of my personal beliefs is that a work of art, whether is it a novel, painting, or a song, needs not only the quality (though it is still the most important thing) but also the repeating discussion and examination for it to be considered a classic. Sure, there are popular arts that lasted for cen...

Did the Pokemon boom affected you?
Their is no deny that the Pokemon boom in the late 1900s-early 2000s was a momentous occasion for anime fans. Many cut their teeth on the show, and while Pokemon served as the gateway drug to anime for some fans, even those it failed to convince, it still left an impression that would colour their p...
