Re: Urusei Yatsura Mailing List, 1986-1991

That UY mailing list archive is a remarkable artefact, as it's one of the first (if not the first) such anime ML. UY still had new episodes on TV when that list started, and the fact that a decent chunk of it was preserved at all was lucky. Other than scattered usenet posts discussing the odd anime,...

Re: Just noticed Leiji Matsumoto's overhauled website

Matsumoto does attend cons in Europe with some regularity, while never coming to the 'States. Of course, his works like Harlock were widely seen in Europe, thus the substantial audience to receive him there (we just got Star Blazers, which is part Nishizaki anyways, along with oddities like the KIKU...

Re: Just noticed Leiji Matsumoto's overhauled website

Leiji's site linked to this french page with a remarkably interesting collection of illustrations he did for sci-fi novels: http://triple-9.fr/?cat=9 For example, here are his illustrations for Northwest Smith from 1972: http://triple-9.fr/?p=885 Finding these rare images was great, and they really ...

Re: End of an Era: SUNET - An ancient Venice FTP mirror

SUNET lives! A mirror of this truly ancient repository of anime history just came online, as the original shut down recently: http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/archive/ftp.sunet.se/pub/tv+movies/anime-manga/ It's really a blast digging through anime images with timestamps like 1988, along with other stuf...

Re: Anyone ever used the anipike?

I just noticed that the Anipike site is down, and it wouldn't surprise me if this is another "living fossil" nearing (or at) it's end on the net. The "Anipike Classic" preservation of the original Anipike is useful for nostalgia and it's links to many ancient anime pages (many de...

End of an Era: SUNET - An ancient Venice FTP mirror

I just noticed that http://ftp.sunet.se/ has announced that they plan to decommission their archives, which include the Venice mirror at http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/tv+movies/anime-manga/ ,with actual removal beginning in September. Archive.org appears to have a perfect backup of the SUNET mirror, so th...

Re: The "ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THIS?" Thread

Laserdiscs can be challenging to collect. LD is now dirt cheap in Japan, with the most lavish box sets going for nothing, but the space constraints over there must make collecting the big discs hard. On the other hand, importing cheap anime lasers to the U.S. from Japan makes for some brutal shippin...

Re: Laserdiscs

Yeah Steve, the epic Galaxy Express 999 series received an equally epic "Triplet Box" laserdisc release spanning 29 discs at a wallet busting 143000 Yen list price total. I have the first two boxes (need to track down 3), and the art, thick boxes with prismatic reflective lettering, and sh...

Re: Laserdiscs

I recently picked up the "Z Gundam Memorial Box Part I" 7 LD box for just $20 on eBay:

Gatefold jackets for the discs are cool:

Laserdisc packaging just blows away everything else.

Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

It's really unfortunate that Discotek could not obtain the rights to the Galaxy Express 999 TV series. Discotek would have done right by this Matsumoto masterwork (as I'm sure they will with the Harlock series) but, alas, S'more got it and put out a botched release. The GE999 series would have fit p...
