Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

Aim for the Ace! Finally, I was wondering why it took so long considering Discotek's love of Dezaki stuff,

Re: What are you Watching?

Well, another round of "newish" anime: Wonder Egg Priority--This is the 2nd Cloverworks work I've seen that has extremely strong Gainax homage vibes (the first being Darling in the Franxx). In a way, it's probably one of those things that turns off both old school fans and younger current ...

Re: Japanese anime fans dusting their VCR for Urusei Yatsura

My nostalgia has a limit. I like good picture quality, so I prefer digital recordings over analog. I do still have a bunch of recordable VHS tapes lying around though. But I don't believe I have any VHS players anymore, if I had any, it would be at my parents' house. My mother would likely have toss...

Re: Sailor Moon to be licensed by Viz Media

I'd probably hold out for a better one if I had the first Viz release, but with Toei who knows if they will ever do proper HD releases of many of their long running TV shows. For me, I've waited long enough to own the first season on disc and I decided this current release is basically "good en...

Re: Sailor Moon to be licensed by Viz Media

I picked up the new Sailor Moon BD re-release of season 1 from Viz. I didn't buy the first release, but I picked this up on the word that this is the Toei upscale and not the Viz 2015 one. So far, so good. DNR is detected by the absence of grain, but the image is very clear and crisp. Here is a quic...

Re: What are you Watching?

So, I finished Minami Kamakura Cycling Club, which wraps up my current dip into the brief blip in cycling anime of the mid 2010s with Yowamushi Pedal, Long Riders, and Minami Kamakura. Of the 3 titles, Minami Kamakura probably has the most lush scenic artwork and consistent character models, but it'...

Re: What are you Watching?

Finally watched Girls Und Panzer Der Film. This movie...will not hold your hand. If you don't know these characters before you watch this, you'll be hopelessly lost as this film doesn't even try to introduce or explain the 20+ characters featured in the film. Hell, I watched the TV series just a yea...

Re: What are you Watching?

I dig Iria, but mostly for being just a good action anime, the action scenes really are well executed. Explosions, smoke, gunplay, hand to hand combat are crisp and mostly all on point. The story and plotting is OK, but mostly serves to move the action along.

Re: What are you Watching?

Yeah, Ayane's High Kick was promoted a lot and seemed like it had a good DVD print run. Someone at CPM must have really liked it. Maybe I'm wrong and it did well, but my impression is that it didn't sell well... Anyway, I've been watching a bunch of cycling related anime this week. Yowamushi Pedal--...

Re: What are you Watching?

Anyway, I watched a few anime that had been on my distant radar these past 15 years: Ayane's High Kick--This anime has to be the most widely available "failure" of all the 90s OVA's that were released in the US. I've probably seen the CPM DVDs of this title in almost every used DVD shop I ...
