Re: RIP Kevin Lillard

That guy was a constant presence at anime cons - if I didn't see him there I knew SOMETHING was wrong. It wasn't until the mid 2000s that the sheer volume of anime conventions meant that he was constantly having to pick one over another - and they were too far apart for him to hit three in a weekend...

Re: AWA 2022

It's been a week and change and I gotta say the con went really well. Everyone was good about masking, the numbers were way up from both last year and from 2019 (AWA's previous highest attendance), and even my 1:00am Anime Hell ran fine. I think I was more worried about being able to stay awake, but...

Re: AWA 2022

On Friday at 3pm ill be hosting At the Movies: A showcase into Trailer AMV's... and at 7pm Head Banging AMV's: Anime and Metal Unite! . I know the VAT crew is trying to get some excitement happening in the room, thanks for helping o...

AWA 2022

It's that time again, it's time for Anime Weekend Atlanta to rise up and start bouncing around again! No Braves playoffs to clog traffic, and the mask & vax policies that kept 2021's AWA COVID-free (seriously, zero cases last year) are still in effect, so it's shaping up to be a great show. What...

Re: Con t-shirt archive? (Also, when did con t-shirts become a thing?)

I don't know when convention t-shirts became a thing, but t-shirts in general as something adults would wear in public (instead of a collared shirt) became a thing in the 1960s along with the relaxation of fashion "rules" in general. The comic conventions I attended in the 1980s definitely...

Re: WTB/WTT: VHS Fansubs

I still have a few tapes of Dr Slump and Fist Of The North Star taped from the Nippon Golden Network subtitling era, myself. It was an exciting time to be getting fairly up to date shows with English subtitles that were broadcast over the air, until suddenly Fuji-TV noticed and pulled the plug. http...

Re: The "Check this item out on eBay" Thread

I still see anime VHS for $1 in the thrifts on occasion -and then I see it in the antique malls for $10. I guess seeing it on Depop or Instagram for $100 is the natural progression of such things. Give it a few years and the fashion victims buying these items as decorations in their hipster pads wil...

Re: annoying tales of anime fandom

OMG, having to copy ALL of Dragonball onto VCD.... that's a nightmare story right there. that's a LOT of VCDs!! What makes it even worse is that you KNOW that guy never watched them all. I'm sure every fan has a similar story of people that overstep the boundaries just a little and then are surprise...

annoying tales of anime fandom

the new Let's Anime is all about the annoying fans we kinda had to deal with back in the days of swapping anime VHS tapes through the mail. Names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty and me!

Re: Prominance of Beta in Anime Tape Trading

I know anecdote doesn't equal data, but my experience was when video rentals became a thing, for whatever reason VHS outnumbered Beta like, 10 to 1. If a video rental shop happened to have Beta tapes, they would be all on one shelf tucked way over to the side, while the vast majority of rentals were...
