Re: Let's Anime looks at the anime movies of 1981

That's a striking image of Gliko the Chipmunk. I'm used to the trope of the anime character with the small woodland creature sidekick, but had never stopped to wonder about the origin. I suppose if the animators had grown up watching woodland creature action-adventure anime, they'd want to sneak it ...

Re: Cassette Girl

I don't suppose there's any chance this ever got an overseas release? The internet says that the whole Japan Animator Expo (other than a few with rights issues) got a release in Japan as part of a Dragon Dentist special edition, but no English subtitles on that one. (I'd check the original website, ...

Re: Anime soundtracks that were never released to CD?

Of course, the minute I post about it, I find it -- CPC8-3017 in 1999. Still maybe an interesting topic, though.

Anime soundtracks that were never released to CD?

...not that there's anything wrong with vinyl or cassettes, of course. :D While looking around to see if I could find the Dagger of Kamui OST on CD, I was surprised to find it never seemed to make the jump.

Are there any other anime soundtracks that you were surprised to find never made it to CD?

Re: "Where's the meeting this week?"

Our "club" met in the chat section of Compu$erve. They called it a "CB simulator" which was an attempt to link to a known technology, which was not the right way to go, since the chat section was so much better. We didn't have physical locations (or problems with people being ne...

Re: "Where's the meeting this week?"

In the flyer that AnEccentricArchivist posted, for instance, the C/FO New York chapter was meeting Saturday afternoons at Club 57 in Manhattan. That was a surprise to me, as Club 57 was a nightclub! Apparently it was quite the happening place -- maybe just at night? https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/2...

Re: What are you Watching?

I watched Pumpkin Scissors for some reason. :D Not a bad show, but I can see why it got bad reviews when it first came out, as the OP does not do a good job representing the show. I think a lot of reviewers came expecting an action show, when instead they got a show where people spent a lot of time ...

Not part of the series, but by the same comic artist, so I thought this would be the place for it.

"Where's the meeting this week?"

One aspect of old-school community clubs that I find interesting today is the variety of meeting places that the clubs had when they weren't connected to a school. Union halls, apartment building rec-rooms, shop back-rooms... so I thought maybe a thread for cataloging these would be fun. :D

Re: Sexism in early anime fandom

replicated the gender dynamics of the larger institutions. Related to this, something I learned out of my own curiosity about this era was that the way I viewed "online" was different than the way it was viewed back then. Like being online now is sort of like having electricity, people do...
