Re: Learning Japanese Customs
I imagine business situations require extremely precise manners, to be sure.

Re: Learning Japanese Customs
Greg and Peter, here's a question for you guys; how comfortable are you in formal Japanese situations? Are you expected to maintain the complicated politeness levels and all that jazz, or are you given some slack?

Re: is fandom hazardous to your health?
Well, no, I have lost weight, but just not in the way I want to. Actually, on my last job in Arizona, I worked in downtown Phoenix and had a lot of free time with that job. I would walk around the downtown area nearly every day on my extended breaks, since I was not really supervised at all. I just...

Re: is fandom hazardous to your health?
There are American football (probably international football (read: soccer) too) fans that have the exact same issue, since it's the same activities: sitting on a couch watching the game & talking about it online. I agree with others that it's all about a level of moderation and taking responsi...

Re: is fandom hazardous to your health?
I had the opposite experience, I moved to another country and lost weight. Moving from the suburbs to a city meant I did more walking and took public transit more often, and moving to Canada from the South meant portion sizes in restaurants were more reasonable. Seriously, we'll visit Georgia and we...

is fandom hazardous to your health?
Over on the AWA message board there is/was a thread called "How old is too old for anime conventions?" It was kind of an interesting discussion among people ranging in age from 15 to 50. I wound up posting this: I'm at the age where some of my fandom peers have spent 20 years in fandom to ...

Re: back to Japan
We did some wandering around nighttime Kabuki-cho on the last trip and didn't feel anything but safe. Certainly Tokyo feels like a very safe city in comparison to some of the less fortunate areas of North America - I'm looking at you, Detroit - but like any big city, I'm sure Tokyo has plenty of way...

Re: back to Japan
We have not been to Ueno or Yamashiroya, but it's on our list now! Yamashiroya looks cool and there's a bunch of touristy stuff in Ueno as well.

Re: back to Japan
Nakano Broadway on Monday the 30th sounds fine. It is one of the few places in Tokyo I'm reasonably certain I can find my way back to, if nothing else.

Re: back to Japan
We did spend some time last time at the Mandarake Complex in Akihabara, yes. There was a steady stream of guys my age selling their toys on the ground floor, and if my language skills were better (aka, extant to any degree) I would have been cutting out the middleman and making some deals with those...
