Re: pages from C/FO Magazine V2 #3

Of course this doesn't even touch Yamato being promoted as 'Star Force' at MIP-TV and NATPE (and even Cannes?) circa 1978, which somehow in some mysterious way led to Star Blazers in 1979. But Dave has much more on that. :) May I ask what is NATPE? Urrgg, it's been so long.. IIrc it's the National ...

Re: pages from C/FO Magazine V2 #3

Oh man. ... History lesson. Space Cruiser Yamato used to be the official title in English. Nishizaki had that plastered EVERYWHERE back in the old days. It came into use, from what I can tell, in '78 with the release of the theatrical feature (which was a cutdown of the 26 episodes of the first TV s...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

Also, according to Wikipedia and Michael Pinto’s writing, the first anime booth that he Brian Cirunick and Robert Fenelon established the first anime booth in an American convention was held at Lunacon 1983. However, in his book Watching Anime , Fred Patten wrote that the three of them had already ...

Re: Gainax's English language newsletter GPress USA at Let's Anime

Was I at that A-Kon Dave? I've lost track. Was there only the one copy of that mag? I'm sure I would have grabbed one if I had seen it. darn. I wish I could find that documentation of that oddball attempt to sell subscriptions to Animage that would include an English language translation 'zine with ...

Re: pages from C/FO Magazine V2 #3

Is Dave familiar with Corn Pone Flicks.... I'll be over here smiling quietly to myself... ;) OK, a further point. It's important to remember the times, and how anime got into the hands of people. Main C/Fo, Los Angeles, was a 'gatekeeper'. They did not just randomly copy tapes (my circle called it '...

Re: Older fans – what is your take on anime and anime fandom today?

I don't think there IS an 'anime fandom' currently. Oh, there's lots of people watching Japanese cartoons, there's heated discussions over at ANN and likely other places, Twitter and Instagram are awash with memes and other things but...fandom? Where is anything that has any reach, any growth, anyth...

Re: Fred Patten RIP

I think it's safe to say that if not for Fred Patten I would not be an anime fan. While Star Blazers is my 'catalyst anime' and set the tone for all my interests and preferences, Fred's article in 'Fanfare Magazine' was the opening of my third eye. A throwaway line about soundtrack LPs and a small c...

Re: everything you never needed to know about Roman Albums

I'm glad Sean showed up, I figured he would have better knowledge of those booklets. It's one point of many where our anime Venn diagram overlap. :)
