Re: What Japanese films are you watching today?

The last Japanese film I watched was GENOCIDE aka WAR OF THE INSECTS, the 1968 Shochiku eco-horror spy disaster movie. Yes, apparently that's a genre! I'm a fan of the hallucinatory GOKE, BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL, from the same studio and screenwriter, and GENOCIDE, while a little more grounded than G...

back from Anime North

I have a big thing about it here:

Had a lot of fun, weather was great, kids behaved themselves, only one car caught on fire.

Re: Not too excited about Yamato 2199

I was there watching Starblazers on TV in 1979 and I think Yamato 2199 is about fifty kinds of awesome. Can't wait for part 2. Not too concerned about the Leiji getting edged out, but that's been happening since, well, since forever. He had his shot at doing his own Yamato and what we got was "...

Re: Blade Runner

One movie of Scott's that I really liked was THE DUELLISTS. It's a period drama, but it has both the authenticity necessary to sell the story AND a modern style to the storytelling and the pacing. There's a trick they do with making the swords spark during the duels that works really well.

Re: Blade Runner

If you watched that movie every Friday night over and over again, I think you can safely assume no one here is a bigger Blade Runner fan than you. I was too young to see it in the theaters in its original run, but I did get the "Blade Runner" release of the original PKD novel "Do Andr...

Re: AnimeEigo opinions

From what I gather, their declining anime catalog is a combination of the decline in the anime market in particular and the decline in overall DVD sales generally, and also is a reflection of the growing interest the company's CEO has in the live-action samurai films. Keeping a title like UY in prin...

Re: Guilty Pleasures

I watched the first 5-episode mini-series that introduced the Transformers to TV back in 198-whatever and wasn't impressed, and subsequently have ignored the whole thing ever since. I did see the (animated) movie, just because it was the 80s and animated films in theaters were few and far between, b...

Re: Old Anime VS New Anime

Darn it, I had a big reply that just got eaten. I can't get that Wayback Machine link to work at all for me, I might have to screen-cap the thing when I get home and post it as an image or something. Looking back on the whole Apollo Smile thing, I can't help but think she was a few years ahead of he...

Re: Old Anime VS New Anime

Anime Jump has been dormant for a long time (site owner Mike Toole now writes for ANN) but the Wayback Machine has it here: http://web.archive.org/web/20060510020144/http://www.animejump.com/index.php?module=prodreviews&func=showcontent&id=214 I also wasn't a big fan of "Angel Sanctuary...

Re: Old Anime VS New Anime

Boy, I HATED Hellsing. I had to review the first DVD for the old AnimeJump website. There was about five minutes worth of genuinely interesting visuals buried in 100 minutes of junk, Victoria Seras' mysteriously changing breast sizes and everything. I've read some of the manga, and that at least was...
