Re: Youtube video "We Have Accepted Mediocrity" snipet focusing on 80s anime

I think I've talked about this before. I feel the difference is, back in the day animation staff were all 'just making the donuts', you know? Devilman, Cutie Honey, Mazinger Z, all that mattered was sling some paint and shoot some cels. The 1960s and 1970s are the era where, in both the West and Ja...

Re: Youtube video "We Have Accepted Mediocrity" snipet focusing on 80s anime

I've toyed with the idea of posting the video up here but frankly, I'm kind of glad someone other than myself did. I, frankly, disagree that there is just as much mediocrity today as there was in the past. I think the ratio of good to bad is very much the same as it has always been. It's the ratio o...

Re: Trailer up for IG's LOTGH

Well, since the show is airing now, and I'm watching it on the old RunchyCroll, I figured I'd toss in my two pennies regarding the show thus far. I've not read the novels. I am looking forward to reading them, though. Therefore, I cannot say how well the two shows are as adaptations of the source ma...

Re: Isao Takahata has passed away

Sometimes you want to be crushed, just to remind yourself that you can still feel. Hm, A touch more morbid than I intended, but I hope the intent is there -_-;;; Perhaps, but considering the film's topic, well... perhaps that's fitting. I totally understand why people are shocked and dismayed by my...

Re: Isao Takahata has passed away

In the documentary about Miyazaki, we can see a friendly rivalry between Miyazaki and Takahata. Each director is trying to make their movies better than the other. I think that rivalry helped to drive these two men toward excellence. I must admit, I've not seen any of Takahata's films, which is a se...

Re: How many of us kept their old collections?

Excluding the final season, the entire series has been released and is in the process of being re-released by Viz. Does that include the movies? I don't think I've seen them on Amazon or Rightstuf. I think Viz is through the first part of SuperS, and they've also released all of Crystal. Video qual...

Re: What are you Watching?

I figured this thread needs a bit of a shot in the arm every so often. I just finished watching Jubei-chan and the new Junji Ito Collection . I've got the last five or so episodes to go on Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight . And I'm also watching the remake of Space Battleship Ya...

Thanks. It's nice to talk to other "old fogies" like myself about "old anime" for a change! (Although they say we're old, we're still young at heart!)

Re: How many of us kept their old collections?

When I left for Korea back in 2008, the world was a different place. Years later, I returned to the United States to discover 1) all the rental shops were gone, 2) VCRs were dead, 3) flat-screens were everywhere, and 4) the entire anime scene had dramatically changed back home. It was like this huge...

Re: How many of us kept their old collections?

When I went off to graduate school around 2003, I left almost all of my VHS anime with my brother, who was in high school. After he went to college, my parents packed up everything and put it in giant tupperware totes in the basement or boxes in the garage. I haven't gone through any of the stuff. I...
