Re: 1989 Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball Search

I see Kanzenshuu finally shut down the DB broadcast audio thread, though the fight rages on in other threads. I give all my old tapes and discs to an individual and I don't really care to get involved in politics these days. I have enough on my plate just looking for things. But I hardly ever cap th...

Re: about those Amateur Press Associations

Ah well, to many of the Youtube generation, we are just old foggies. Still. I tried to interest some people who were looking for old or "lost" material recently but was ignored. It doesn't help that I was willing to give them examples of stuff that no one had on Youtube. Result? Dead silen...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?

Depends on what you are looking for in old comics. The real problem these days is finding a comics shop that does mail order. Most do not. With the pandemic, many may be looking into doing so but it's not an easy proposition. My boss started his company almost 30 years ago. He has been on the web fo...

Re: Pirating anime music in the 1980s

That is the operative word NOW. At the time in the early 1980s, things were much more flexible. It wasn't until the Reagan era as I recall that things started to get draconian, though there was some rumblings after the Betamax case. I never heard of a Japanese outfit suing a fan in the 1980s. This w...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

A bud of mine had an LD of the first one that got transferred to tape. That got subbed by other friends. I think I still have the tapes around here someplace. But I started to get things from my penpal (copies anyway) from then on. But mostly not so heavy stuff like Project A-ko, or the Lemon Angel ...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

I just realized that this month marks 40 years since I got my first tapes in from my bud in Nagasaki. June 1980. I'm amazed that at least some of the tapes are still watchable and able to be archived. Sadly, some are not with my attempts to fix them being failures. So it goes...

Re: Japanese authors visiting America in the 1970s to 1990s

Tezuka did tours several times in the 1980s. My bud in Minneapolis has a pic of himself and Tezuka and i got a couple of items autographed by him through my friend. Sadly, no one ever came up this far north that I was aware of, even just passing through...

Re: An index of prominent figures in the early anime fandom?

According to Fanta's Zine #3 Nov./Dec. 1979, in a letter from Ann she says that she is learning Japanese and makes reference to her Japanese class and her teacher as well as being able to do some limited translations from some 8 Man manga by looking up the Hiragana. So, she was doing limited fan tr...

Probably. The JFFS stuff I got when I joined in 1980 has a lot of kaiju material in it from the first newsletter. I lost track of him and I don't remember seeing him at the 2000 Worldcon.
