Re: least essential OVAs of the 1980s
It's like how we used to watch music videos on MTV. In the words of Matt Groening, "These last ten videos have been crappy. Maybe the next one will be cool." That was pretty much how I spent the summer of 1983.

Re: least essential OVAs of the 1980s
part of the anime club culture of that era was that Japanese animation was this rare, precious thing, so we'd watch damn near ANYTHING as long as it was a Japanese cartoon. That meant episodes of aggressively childish TV shows next to bloody gory OVAs full of bare breasts and beheadings and defenest...

Re: The Latest Movies (Non-Anime) You Are Watching Right Now
You're right, Larson didn't work on "Logan's Run". I must have gotten it mixed up with "The Misadventures Of Sheriff Lobo."

Re: The Latest Movies (Non-Anime) You Are Watching Right Now
I know Logan's Run is seen as pretty campy these days (and it is!), but there's something really effective in the way it slaps the sleazy 1970s hedonism of anonymous sex, recreational drugs, gauzy tights for everybody up against sudden, violent, societally-approved death. I first saw it as a kid on ...

Re: Article: Japan's sexual apathy is endangering the econom
I agree that an aging population is going to present a giant whack of serious problems, and that Japan is going to have to take a hard look at its immigration policies and see if they can't make some changes. On the other hand, if any country can handle tough challenges, it's Japan. I dunno if this ...

Re: least essential OVAs of the 1980s
Some readers have taken the article to be a list of OVAs I hated, which it isn't, and others thought it was a list of MOST essential rather than the opposite. Reading is fundamental, I guess. I would find it hard to work up any real malice or hate about an anime video. It's an anime video, it's not ...

Re: Article: Japan's sexual apathy is endangering the econom
I can't speak for anybody but myself and Shain, but both of us are very happy we've been able to be married and live our lives without the societal expectation that we'd be popping out babies all the time. Or ever. It's only been a few decades here in the West that we've been able to live like that,...

Re: "After Miyazaki" article--wtf?
That article was laughable. I hate even discussing it because it was such obvious link-bait, as are most of the Buzzfeed-style list-sicles you see these days, but it's as if he picked 9 names at random and threw Tezuka in there to demonstrate he had a clue. This article reminds me of an anime panel ...

Re: OK, what's the deal with Kuroko's Basketball?
Reading the 2chan translation of the guy's letter, it has the same selfish, obsessed tone as do many conversations I've had with troublesome fans over the years, the sense of entitlement, the idea that we HAVE to listen to their demands, the willingness to cause trouble for lots and lots of people o...
