Re: So... that was Attack on Titan...

I wasn't sure if they were going to stick the landing, but I think they did! I hadn't been reading ahead in the manga so it's been a little tricky to keep from being spoiled, but I managed it. The show managed to get past some of its more questionable creative choices (hey, I wrote silly, ponderous ...

AWA 2023

AWA is happening in a week or so and we're heading that way tomorrow! This is the 28th AWA and the 20th in its current location, which will be changing next year! So stay tuned. In the meantime here's what I'm up to this year: the SUPER HAPPY FUN SELL: tumblr_e51af14221c28570b59856bb526a9f2a_4ce6c10...

Re: The Right Stuf International 1995-1996 catalog

these are terrific, thanks for the scans! A real walk down memory lane. Right Stuf sent our convention a literal pallet of catalogs in 1997 or 1998, enough for everyone at our convention to take home one or two. We were, let's say, not really ready for dealing with a pallet - we didn't have a truck...

Re: Eras of Anime

Glad to fill a knowledge gap. I have to correct myself - Brian DePalma directed "Body DOUBLE" while Lawrence Kasdan directed "Body Heat". Come on guys, get some new titles. I was a teen in the 1980s and as someone who watched a lot of movies on TV and spent a lot of time in the b...

Re: Eras of Anime

For the anime itself, I think the big cultural split is availability -- I noticed this listening to a recent review of Blade Runner that mentioned that it was derivative of Film Noir, without really seeming to realize that in 1982 VHS was still in its infancy and there was no internet, so unless th...

Re: Eras of Anime

My definition of "classic" has moved from 1990 until about 1995. I guess at some point the cutoff will be around the year 2000? In terms of "eras" Japanese animation can be cut any way you care to slice it. I tend to lump things together in a matrix that combines both a historica...

Re: anime con room parties of the past

I do think that the anime fan scene is big enough in Atlanta and in Toronto and whereever that we could have smaller more relaxed anime conventions that would be more about friends getting together and socializing, rather than the big spectacles the big shows are. However, all the hotels and convent...

Re: anime con room parties of the past

here in 2023, it feels like the, I don't know what to call it, the corporatization or the conglomeration or the monetization or the whatever of the fan conventions, the crowds and the money came in and the ability to throw a room party went out. First off. It's physically difficult to physically get...

Re: anime con room parties of the past

I always like to poke my head into room parties if they're open to anyone. Back in the day when conventions were two or three thousand attendees, max, you could almost guarantee you'd know someone in the room. And if you didn't, you could make new friends pretty easily!
