Joy's Japanimation?

Post by mbanu »

Either the photos are from 2001, or they have a huge collection of new old stock, including an extensive VHS rental library for capturing the whole experience. (^_^)

Anyone in the Pittsburgh, PA area ever been over there?
mbanu: What's between Old School and New School?
runesaint: Hmmm. "Middle School", perhaps?

If this store still looks like this, I am definitely going to visit on our next trip through that area!

I hope those VHS tapes are still there, and all under $.50 cents because there are things I so want on that shelf. Also that Gundam Sentinal book, I want that too :D

Judging by the URL linked for the Disciples of Zor website, those photos may actually predate 2001. I think they switched to a proper .com domain at some point around 2000/2001.

I knew Fer (the co-owner of Joy's Japanimation) through that club, which was a largish Robotech fanclub spread out between AOL forums, web forums, and weekly chatrooms. Fer handled the club's weekly newsletter and was an all-around really nice guy. The only thing I ever ordered from his store was a copy of the Bubblegum Crisis B-Club Special for ridiculously cheap, but he held it for me for a couple of months even though he could have easily flipped it to someone else for 4x as much.

I have no idea what the shop is like now, but it seems to still exist because their Facebook page is updated regulaarly: https://www.facebook.com/JoysJapanimation/

Judging from the YouTubedescription on this commercial, the business might have been sold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWCM1HcMK14

The company was sold to one of their employees I believe. I haven't been there in at least couple of years. He did small conventions in the region from time to time.
