Sad news today that KyoAni suffered a major tragedy: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2019/ ... TCRBOhKiUk

For those who may not know: KyoAni started as a support studio, mostly staffed by women, & helped with things like SDF Macross, Time Bokan, Urusei Yatsura, Minky Momo, Kimagure Orange Road, Evangelion, and more. Here's a great article on their history: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2018/08/25 ... nt-vision/

It was briefly the top morning story around my area, pretty shocking.

It's heartening to see how many cartoon/animation related accounts and folks have commented on what happened. It really has effected fans world wide! I've even seen CNN and The New York Times run pieces on it.

CR is taking fan messages as well, that will be passed along to Kyoani: https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/ ... -animation

A few names are out now, some really good veteran talent. Yasuhiro Takemoto, Naomi Ishida and Sachie Tsuda to name ones I've seen.

Takemoto of course co-directed the Haruhi series. I was a big cheerleader for Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya in here a couple of years ago.

I haven't posted any names myself because Kyoani requested names not be shared yet, but some news outlets have been sharing them anyway. Regardless, it's incredibly sad to hear :( I'm sure there'll be more sad news as we learn of all the losses in the future.

On a more positive note: Rightstuf has set up a donation page for Kyoani. Kyoani has said they will take donations in the form of wire transfer, but in tiny increments those are expensive and they have to pay tax on it. Rightstuf says they will pay all the fees, so Kyoani will get all donations no matter how small. This is excellent for those who can only chip in a few dollars: https://www.rightstufanime.com/1-Donati ... -Animation

They'll be collecting money til Aug 31, 2019!

Odd that they charged me tax on a donation. I guess their software isn't capable of knowing that there should be no tax charged on this item. Not that it makes much of a difference but I guess someone should let them know...

While charitable donations are tax deductible in places like the US, overseas the laws are different and it gets tricky. Supposedly in Japan, Kyoani got special permission from the government to wave many of the taxes on donations towards the fire, but this may not apply to donations from outside Japan.
