Re: Zac Bertschy is dead
From the reactions I've been seeing this seems to have been completely out of the blue. I'm slightly bothered there seems to be no mention of the cause of death.
I didn't often agree with his reviews (but his enthusiasm for 'Keep your hands off the film club!' was infectious and sold me on it 100%) and there were times in his Answerman columns I felt he missed a few important data points in some discussions, but overall he seemed a good person I would have enjoyed talking to at a con. His guidance of ANN made it a cut above just another fan site bitching about stuff.
Too young. too young. My condolences to those who knew him better.

Connecting it back to the Old School; everybody starts somewhere.

Thanks!

The replies, plucked from a long and rambling thread about Disney and anime.

Wasn't the english word taken from the french one? Or is it vice versa?

especially during the American occupation after WWII, the Japanese were
quite influenced with American animation (Disney, Jones, et al) and comics.
Greats like Osamu Tezuka publicly admitted that he was very much
influenced and inspired by Walt Disney's early works. With the American
influence, the Japanese shorten their pronounciation of "anima-shun" to
"anime" (pronounced "annie-may").
And yes, "anime" is also French considering English is essentially a
language based upon other languages (ie. French, Latin).

Man-jiare is Italian for "eating". Man-jia means "eat". (^_^)
"Man-ga" is better.

Re: Zac Bertschy is dead
From the way the article was written (and his most recent Twitter comments), it seemed apparent on my end that this was due to mental illness and was most likely a suicide. I used to butt heads with Zac a lot during his Answerman and Tales from the Convention days. His responses to me felt like he had internalized whatever was written to the point that it deeply disturbed him. I would always mock him for allowing words to control him like that. But having lived with a parent who has dealt with mental illness for most of my life, I could tell from his many comments that he was dealing with many of the same issues. Judging from the Twitter comments, I'm sorry to say that it looks like I was right in that regard.
Disagreements aside, I'm sorry that he passed away. I'm sure his friends and family are going to be asking themselves a lot of 'what ifs' over the course of the coming months ahead, and I hope that they're able to get the help that some of them might need to address that.
Re: Zac Bertschy is dead
This damned pandemic is really testing people. While I hope that Zac's death isn't connected to COVID-19, it is still a blow in these hard times.

Re: Zac Bertschy is dead
it's terrible news that has hit a lot of my friends really hard. I didn't have a lot of interaction with him other than Twitter and being on the ANN podcast once, and sure, he had an insatiable appetite for midlist Hollywood dreck that was inexplicable, but he was a friend and I'm gonna miss him, and I hope every failed human who used him as an attempted whipping boy for daring to have Opinions feels bad today, because they should.
