This is a translation of an accessible, analytic take on the music of Royal Space Force and its effect on the movie.

Frankly, I was pretty sure that I'd probably never put up anything about Royal Space Force on my blog. I've kinda realized in general I don't have enough distinct opinions about particular anime titles to actually compose an article of my own, and for a title with such a long and thorough history in anime fandom I was even more certain I'd have nothing to contribute given what everyone's already said about this for the past 30+ years.

That being said, one thing I find myself very interested in is the reaction of Japanese fans to some of the titles us Western fans hold so dear. With the internet and social media, the disconnect has shrunk by a considerable margin when discussing modern titles. However with the classics, it's a lot less clear to me how the low-key fans reacted.

Recently I came across this Japanese column, One Thousand and One Nights of Soundtracks, from some person who goes by the alias Haramaki Neko. It's regularly updated and hosted on WEB Anime Style (which is a really awesome site with tons of cool columns both from people inside and outside of the industry; the wealth of information that is just sitting on there is really mindblowing). He writes specifically about the soundtracks that accompany anime. Just a month ago, he did an article on RSF. As far as I can recall, I hadn't seen that much in-depth writing in English about the soundtrack to RSF besides that it sounds pretty unique and therefore fits the movie. To be fair I may have just missed such articles.

Anyway I figured that this could actually add something to the English language discussion of RSF, and simultaneously bridge the gap between the Japanese audience and the Western audience.

Doing this has just reminded how not cut out for translation I am, but oh well. I may also just be making it unnecessarily hard for myself since I went out of my way to add all those footnotes. It also helps me ensure I'm actually on the same page as the author.

Following the article on RSF's soundtrack, Haramaki Neko wrote one about the soundtrack of Metropolis. I haven't read it yet, but as far as anime soundtracks go that one is another very memorable one.

Thanks for your translation of this! It's an interesting read and I'm grateful to be able to read it in English. Nice work!
