finally finished a Let's Anime about Thunderbirds 2086! You know, Thunderbirds 2086, the Japanese animation that was based on the 60s Gerry Anderson Supermarionation adventure series, until it wasn't based on that show any more, and then it was again!

Cheers! It is a great article! Although I have got to ask about the animation landscape of the time when examining the show's lack of success: How deluged were US and UK television at the time with toy-centric animated shows? Transformers aside, another shows where vehicles played a central role that come on top of my head is M.A.S.K.

I can't speak for UK television, but the 1983- 1984 US television schedule featured several toy-specific shows like GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, Go Bots, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, and Voltron. M.A.S.K. started in 1985.

With so much shows at the same type, it got me questioned whether there was a toy cannibalism - there was no way parents could had afford that many figures for their children. Unless the toymakers had realized the adult collector market as early as the 1980s.

Also, speaking of Thunderbirds 2086and Go-Bots, are you aware of any other series with Japanese mechanical designers (like Shoji Kawamori, who actually designed Optimus Prime)?

there are several co-produced series that were written in the United States but produced in Japan; one of the most notable is Mighty Orbots, but others include Bionic Six, Pole Position, and several other toy tie-in series and specials like "Poochie" and "Blinkins." The second season of Kidd Video and of "Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends" also was animated in Japan. As to who did design work on each show, it's a mixed bag.
