Welcome to the board, Austin, and might I say that that 999 cel is great?! Because it is!

Thanks Dave! I've been a fan of your Let's Anime blog since I found it a few years ago. Hopefully I can finally make it to Anime Hell one of these days. I've wanted to go to one for probably more than five years now.davemerrill wrote:Welcome to the board, Austin, and might I say that that 999 cel is great?! Because it is!
Revenge Road is a cool episode although Red Eyes is probably my favorite. I grabbed a BGC poster from Kurt at AB 2017! I thought about asking one of his employees if I could get a discount since I was buying four posters but didn't for some reason (I should have since the guy even asked me if I was okay with the subtotal). I asked for Kurt's business card at AB 2017 so hopefully it'll be easier for him to remember me if I run into him again at another convention this year.Dkop wrote:The last poster I bought from Kurt was my BGC Revenge Road that hangs above my computer at the moment. Its one of my favorite BGC episodes so of course i'd spend whatever to get it. He was cool taking off like 10 bucks for me when I got it.
Oh wow, yeah I've seen the insane prices that original sketches can go up to (I think Kurt even had some Captain Harlock sketch from Leiji Matsumoto at AB 2017 this year or something).Akage" wrote:Oh yays, someone else here collects cels. I used to buy a lot of cels and then I switched to the original sketches drawn by the artists themselves. I traded an expensive hobby for something even more expensive!
When I talked to Kurt at AB 2017 he told me that one of his friends sold their entire collection of cels to him so he got a bunch of new stuff from that. I've forgotten what new stuff came from that bulk purchase.Akage wrote:Kurt's a nice guy. I used to buy a lot more from him when he had really nice Cardcaptor Sakura cels, but ever since his contact moved abroad, he hasn't received any more. I have a friend who likes to sell him all her Dragonball Z cels that she can't sell.
I'd love to hang out with other "old school otaku"! This year is going to be my first year traveling out of state for anime conventions (my first anime convention was AB 2016 despite having been an anime fan for over a decade) and I already took a big chunk out of my funds to travel to Otakon and AWA (two cons I've wanted to go to for 5+ years). I'm going by myself ( ) so I'm fronting the hotel cost entirely for AWA for a room that can fit up to three people (apparently). It'd be a bit difficult to justify traveling for another convention on top of these two so I'll probably have to push it to planning for next year. I'm not sure if people arrange convention get-togethers on the forum but I'll have to pay attention for any threads like that.Akage wrote:You should go to a more collector-heavy con. Several of us hang around in a group. You're welcome to join us. We were at Animazement in May and we'll be in Dallas for AnimeFest.

Nope, it's neither LOGH nor Robot Carnival. There's a really obvious hint I could give but I'm going to keep things fun by posting another cel from the same source to keep things interesting.
Collector-heavy cons are cons that have several Japanese artists, or one really big Japanese artist that the group wants to see. Extra points goes conventions that allow their guests to draw and have charity auctions with a good supply of guest donated artwork. It boils down to how easy is it to get artwork, whether by standing in line or just paying for it.karageko wrote:I'd love to hang out with other "old school otaku"! As far as "collector-heavy" cons it'd be great to know the ones to look out for besides the ones you mentioned. I'm very much a convention newbie as you've probably figured out by now .
Aww shucks, thanks for the compliment. We all had a good time hanging out with you as well.DKop wrote:I was able to meet up with Akage at Animazement, so you get to meet cool people like her. That bubble tea shop was pretty good, my drink lasted till the rest stop in SC I get off at below Rock Hill, so i'd love to try bubble tea again in the future. That Mexican restaraunt downtown was meh for me, but maybe it'll get better the next time I'll meet up with you guys.
I've never heard Rubberslug but it sounds neat so I'll have to check it out.Akage wrote:My group and I consist of about 20 people, but usually no more than half of us will show up to any one con. All of us collect original sketches and/or cels, with several people collecting both. Like any group, some of us get along better than others. We eat together and hang out. Many of us are really good friends with each other, and all of us met either through collecting or at cons. Some of us have Rubberslug galleries. Not sure if you want to publicly show off your cels, but Rubberslug isn't a bad site for a gallery (though updating can be a bit wonky at times).
We share hotel rooms, but not to the point of room stuffing. At Animazement, we had 3 hotel rooms for the 6 of us. Everyone got a bed.
A couple of them are attending Otakon and AWA. Do you have the LINE app? It's a texting app but you can give us your LINE ID instead of a phone number. I'm sure some of the guys wouldn't mind having you around as long as you're ok with spending most of your con experience waiting in line for autographs from Japanese guests. I know that Preston is going to both Otakon and AWA as well, so maybe after meeting him at Otakon, you two could work something out for AWA.
It definitely sounds like it. Most of my friends I met in college are video game or general-nerd type people but few of them really have a focused investment into anime itself. There's nothing wrong with that (and in fact I do have other nerd interests), but it kinda sucks for me to have all this fascination of old anime bottled up inside without any outlet to talk about it with anyone. That's why I finally joined the board! I don't think any of those aforementioned friends would want to go out of state just for an anime convention and even if they did they probably wouldn't be interested in checking out the same stuff as me.Akage wrote:If you have a good base of friends (like us!), go to the cons that they attend. Even if the con blows, you still can have a good time with friends. Can't tell you how many times friends have saved me from a mediocre con experience.
