California's "Japanese Fantasy Film Faire" (1979-1982)?

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

California's "Japanese Fantasy Film Faire" (1979-1982)?

Post by mbanu »

Fred Patten has mentioned it in a couple articles in passing:
Fred Patten wrote:Japanese Fantasy Film Faire 1, on December 15-16, 1979 in a mall in Union City, was promoted through comic book specialty shops and on San Francisco-area TV. It drew an attendance of over a hundred for a program of both anime and live-action fantasy (Ultraman, Godzilla) videos. The final Japanese Fantasy Film Faire 4, on February 12-14, 1983 at a hotel in San Mateo, grew to an estimated 500 attendees.
The internet suggests that these events were produced by kaiju-film promoters Bob Johnson and August Ragone, but I haven't seen anything about the events directly; has anyone ever written about them more in-depth?
mbanu: What's between Old School and New School?
runesaint: Hmmm. "Middle School", perhaps?
