Phoenix Japanimation Society?

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Not to be morbid, but it's actually not entirely clear if Bruce Carlson i's dead or if a medical condition has taken him offline. There has been idle discussion online, but nobody seems to know. A lot of the chatter for and against seems to stem from 4chan rumors, which of course can't be trusted for any reliable information. (^_^;)

With John Fong it's a bit different; this was mentioned by his friend Gregg Sharp:
five years ago, i was running the Metroanime anime club and hadn't done any
fanfiction. Except maybe that "Three 1/2's Company" piece. i had only seen
two episodes of Sailor Moon, in the original Japanese, and hadn't been able
to get past the initial silliness factor.

go back a few years.

Anyone remember the Phoenix Japanimation Society back in the mid to late 80s
when we were mainly myself, Tom Perry, and the late John Fong trying to form
an anime club when hardly anybody had heard of anime? When we were crowding
people together into a dark room to watch 3rd generation tapes of Orguss,
Macross, Lupin, and Urusei Yatsura? Before commercial subtitling and the
internet provided ways of getting in contact with actual translated anime?
Before Robotech, which was hackery but did manage the collosal feat of
slapping people across the face with the idea that there was something
besides Disney and old Hanna-Barbera to do with animation?

mbanu: What's between Old School and New School?
runesaint: Hmmm. "Middle School", perhaps?

I thought for sure there was a blog post by someone of his family to confirm that he did pass away, because that how I knew the news.
