90's Sci-Fi Channel Saturday Anime

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Luckily I have most of them still on tape as I was recording them from satellite at the time or getting them from friends with BUDs (Big Ugly Dishes...the old C Band ones that were 10 feet across or more). Got lots of old tapes like that...
I really miss that era of the Sci-Fi channel! I used to love watching these shows as a kid, and now some of them can be very difficult to find in any format--I'm looking at you, Spider-Man with Nicholas Hammond.

That's really cool that you have tapes with so much of this content; don't lose those tapes! ;)
I've seen some of it posted online. I think all the Spider-Man episodes are available. I'll try to remember next time. Bixby's The Magician isn't though. I have the complete run of episodes. Maybe I should transfer those over before they deteriorate further. Anything else you are looking for?

Have any of you here watched CometTV? It's an antenna-accessible channel based in Los Angeles, but many places around the US get their feed.

They run a lot of old cultish-sci-fi/horror/fantasy stuff, mostly culled from the MGM catalogue.

Lots of interesting old things pop up on the channel. They currently air Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot on Saturday and Sunday Mornings, and two episodes at around midnight on late Sunday-early Mondays.

They have been airing Alakazam the Great several times during the past few weeks, although like most of their movie airings, it is shown in SD and 4:3 aspect ratio instead of its original widescreen.

Yea CometTV is that station that has a stream on their site to see what they are airing without really paying for their channel. They have some really obscure stuff that I never heard of before I did some looking to watch them myself (like Vicious Lips, which that was... something to watch, great music btw).

I'd assume they might get some anime properties that are sci-fi related one day, but we'll see.

Technically their channel is free...I mean you can get it without cable and just with the antenna/digital tuner. But oddly enough it's harder to get IF you have cable it seems.

As far as anime goes, I think they would only air stuff that's part of the MGM library. So I'd be looking for more of those old Toei movies, like Magic Boy (but you can get Magic Boy on DVD through the Warner Archive line anyway)

There was a brief period toward the end when Saturday Anime was moved from the Saturday morning timeslot to early Sunday -- maybe experimenting with less edited shows to improve ratings?

A few schedules from the Sun 3am EST timeslot:

01/02/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 1)
01/09/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 2)
01/16/1999: Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer
01/23/1999: Venus Wars (Letterboxed)
01/30/1999: Demon City Shinjuku
02/06/1999: Casshan: Robot Hunter
02/13/1999: Record of Lodoss War
02/20/1999: E.Y.E.S. of Mars
02/27/1999: Project A-ko (Letterboxed)

03/27/1999: Gall Force: Eternal Story
04/03/1999: Akira (Letterboxed)
04/10/1999: Project A-Ko Vs. Battle 1 & 2
04/17/1999: Green Legend Ran
04/24/1999: Armitage III: Poly-Matrix
05/01/1999: Demon City Shinjuku
05/08/1999: Replaced with The Andromeda Strain
05/15/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 1)
05/22/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 2)
05/29/1999: Vampire Hunter D
06/05/1999: Gall Force: Eternal Story
06/12/1999: Record of Lodoss War
06/19/1999: Casshan: Robot Hunter
06/26/1999: Replaced by showing of Starman
07/03/1999: Odin: Photon Sailor Starlight
07/10/1999: Venus Wars (moved to 4am to accommodate It Came From Outer Space II)
07/17/1999: Armitage III: The Poly-Matrix

09/11/1999: Replaced by Strange Days
09/18/1999: E.Y.E.S. of Mars
09/25/1999: Replaced by Dune

Then sometime either in October or at the start of November it moved to 11am EST on Saturdays; a few schedules from then:

11/06/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 1)
11/13/1999: Iria: Zeiram (Part 2)
11/20/1999: Casshan: Robot Hunter
11/27/1999: Roujin Z
12/04/1999: Armitage 3: Poly-Matrix
12/11/1999: Tenchi Muyo in Love
12/18/1999: Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight

I think it was cancelled at the end of 1999; the anime movies themselves were still played on Sci-Fi occasionally, but not as part of a Saturday Anime block.

It looks like initially they were considering bumping it up an hour to noon rather than cancelling; with plans to run another anime series at 11:00am. (https://groups.google.com/forum/message ... CnkG5P__QJ)

Here's a (partial?) tentative schedule:

12:00 PM EST:

01/15/2000: Gall Force: Eternal Story
01/22/2000: Venus Wars
01/29/2000: Roujin Z

However, the timeslot was actually filled for 2000 by Space: Above and Beyond and First Wave. Once those wrapped up, it was devoted to Scinema Feature, a sci-fi film slot, and maybe in a concession to fans, occasionally showed anime films as well, although not as a dedicated block.

12:00 PM EST 02/03/2001: Scinema Feature - Galaxy Express 999: The Signature Edition
02:00 AM EST (technically Sunday) 02/17/2001: Scinema Feature - Armitage III: Poly-Matrix
mbanu: What's between Old School and New School?
runesaint: Hmmm. "Middle School", perhaps?

These listings are a gold mine of info. It's always good to have this stuff archived and cataloged somewhere on the net for people to see. I've had to do this with some Toonami Schedules I am curious about. Thanks for finding this out!!!
