Daicon 4 (1983)- A fanfilm by the founders of gainax

Post by megcon4 »

Hello
In recent months I sat closely to analyze a fan film called "daicon 4" (1983). This mythical fan film was created by 12 people, the people who would form the basis of studio gainax (evangelion, flcl, nadia and many others). The thing that truly grabbed my attention was a short 5 second scene near the end of the film. In this scene, we se dozens of characters from a massive array of media, both inside and outside of japan. I sat for months trying to decipher the various characters and I ask for your help on the matter. If you have any character you find, please post their name and the show/ movie/ anime/ manga they're from. I've added some of the scenes from what I consider to be the best rip of this film on the web (done by a user called kuchikirukia).

Thank you for your help.

In the first image you clearly see the Dunbine robot on that top right, in the second frame I see the female robot from Technopolice 21C, Kycilia Zabi (Gundam), Cobra (Space Adventure Cobra) and Doraemon are the ones I notice. Third frame is the main character from Cyborg 009. Fourth frame is Gigantor on the top right. Sixth is Lum from Urusei Yatsura in the middle. Seventh has Pris from Blade Runner, Wonder Woman, Kamen Rider, Yoda, and Emeraldes are the ones I picked up on. The last one has Dekard from Blade Runner on the bottom right and the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz that I picked up on. Everything else seems to look familiar that I can't place or I just don't know.

I saw a comment on Youtube that summed it up well:
Basically everything up until 1983 is in there.

2nd pic from top:
Top left has about half of Susumu Kodai from Yamato (Wildstar in Starblazers)
Hard to tell but maybe that's Cobra (from Cobra) just bottom left of Lum
Char (?) from Gundam below that

2nd from last pic:
to the left of the two astronauts is Baltan I believe from Ultraman
Bottom left hand corner is Priss from Blade Runner
Wonder Woman above the guy tin the sailor cap

two things:

If you enjoy the Daicon film you'll enjoy the TV comedy Blue Blazes, based on the manga by Kazuhiko Shimamoto, who went to art school in Osaka with Hideaki Anno and a lot of other future Gainax talent. Blue Blazes is loosely autobiographical and features a sequence where Anno, Toshio Okada, and their crew assemble to animate the Daicon film.

Secondly, I feel almost certain that there's an already extant resource of exactly who's featured in the Daicon film. I mean, it was planned, storyboarded, penciled, inked, painted, and shot; every character is in there deliberately. It might be in Japanese, but there's a list out there already.

WHABAM!! I knew this existed online because I remember reading about the references in the Daicon IV short but its been a few years. Not sure if this is the same article I remember reading, but a lot of it is mentioned:

I know of this list yes, I sat over it, the one in hatena, the various youtube comments and blogs, takeshi murakami's analysis, the wikipedia article and so forth. Their is no complete list on the web so far, my goal is to analyse daicon 4 to the best of my ability on its references. It proves how far western media and various other meduas played a role in the otaku indie works scene of the 80's and the shows of later years.

I should note that only one more external source exists and that is one of toshio okada's books. I haven't been able to find these books so far.

You help me a lot, thanks to you I found the pink robot's identity (so far with the help of resources, friends and identity speculation based on existing media until 1983, the list of characters for this scene alone is over 200).

I'm more than eager to hear more of your findings.

Furthermore, I have sat on the existing sketches of daicon 4 on the web. They're taken from the sketchbook.

Yea lucky for you I have an enjoyable fascination with TechnoPolice. I'm more than 98% certain its the robot from that anime because i've never seen that design anywhere other than TechnoPolice.
