Unreleased anime of the past

One of the first "Wow" things I came across when I started getting into retro anime was that PV of a Creamy Mami/Heavy Metal L-Gaim crossover. Due to whatever circumstance it never came to be and that PV is the only proof of its existence.

Now I thought that was the first instance of it but later on a memory I seemingly tucked away lit up and I remember a similar case earier in my life: A PV for the animated series of Falcom's action RPG Popful Mail which also unfortunately never went anywhere.

Are there any other cases like this? Anime at the time that were teased and promised but ultimately never happened?

I don't think Pony Metal U-Gaim was ever actually intended to be an anime series, that promotional video was produced as marketing for an MSX2 game developed by ASCII and the video itself was later sold via General Products. Prior to both the video and the game, U-Gaim was just a doujin series. I've written about it a bit here: http://www.zimmerit.moe/pony-metal-u-gaim/

As for other unreleased titles, there's a couple others I can think of:

Gainax's R20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPJhxco5QWQ
Macross 3D: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJwQ-KxmwQ4

Speaking of Gainax properties, Route 20 Galactic Airport was something of a concept that was only a short video to the Doors "Crystal Ship" song and thats all. The only thing concept wise taken from that video to later Gainax properties was the TV robot in FLCL, or there is a striking resemblance to that character and the person in Route 20. That's about all I can think off off the top of my head right now.

Edit: Of course Sean would beat me to the Route 20 video, I didn't see his link before I posted, but oh well.

That's a neat article zimmerit. It didn't occur to me that it could have been a video game promo. That Macross 3D looks interesting, if only because 3D animation halfway or near the turn of the century is engaging.

A couple of days ago someone linked me a couple of tweets from anime writer Masumi Kaneda about what seems to be a pilot for an unaired manga adaptation. I can't make out entirely what it says but it depics a character named Naga in a pilot animated by Toei. It could be that it's something that actullly did come out though and I'm just misinformed, but searching for it got me no results.

I have something that I was told was a pilot film / proof of concept for an anime based on the "Yami No Purple Eyes" supernatural shoujo manga, but research says that there was a "music video ova" produced for it, so that might be what I have.

The Unico pilot film I have on Japanese VHS but I think it's been included on at least one of those Discotek releases. The Lupin pilot is definitely on that Lupin III part 1 DVD set.

There are pilots for a few Tezuka projects that never made it, like Noman, and others that did, like Triton of the Sea. I've never seen either of those.

It's newer, but there was supposed to be a Rose of Versailles compilation movie in 2008 that never got released/fully completed for whatever reason. There was even a teaser made: https://youtu.be/o-FLNU39N3E
