Surprise lolicon.

Post by danth »

Have you ever bought something that looked awesome from the cover but ended up having seriously wrong stuff inside?

This has happened to me twice. The first time was in Japan. I was scouring the Mandarake stores in Akiba and Nakano for artbooks, manga, and anything that looked cool. I found some stuff, doujins I think, from Kenichi Sonoda. I am a huge fan of his work on Gall Force and Bubblegum Crisis and the stuff I found had great sci-fi looking images on their covers. So I bought them and when I got home, to my horror, found what looked like pictures of naked little girls inside having lots of kiddie sex. I brought that shit through customs! Luckily I had a friend online who also likes Kenichi Sonoda so I sold the books to him.

Then just last week I received some books I had ordered from Mandarake. They had AWESOME cover art. Here are some examples:
http://imgur.com/a/gI2Jw Looks like cool sci-fi stuff right? Well, when I got these, I turned them over and guess what was on the back cover of each of them? Nekkid little girls! And inside was a bunch kiddie sex and only a tiny amount of cool robot fighting. I was pretty bummed by this because the covers looked so cool. I eventually just tossed the books into the recycling bin.

No more random purchases like this for me.

Oh god, how horrifying! :o this is why even tho they inflate the prices a lot, I tend to only buy doujinshi at cons from sellers who will let me flip through the book first. I've had friends have similar stories were the cover looked like one thing & the inside was completely different... I don't need those kinds of surprises in my life, thanks.

Living near a Kinokuniya is something I miss, too. Being able to look briefly at the inside of a book before deciding to buy it is a luxury some manga fans just don't have when buying Japanese books online :(

Thanks for the reply!

I think the main danger is with more obscure doujin type stuff. Which sucks because obscure and rare things are what get me excited the most.

I don't buy much doujinshi, so when I have purchased stuff in a blind lot before on Yahoo Japan, the most depressing thing I usually get is that the cover artwork is much nicer than the artwork inside. Nothing like purchasing a doujinshi because of some amazing cover artwork only to find that what's inside amounted to quick pencil sketches. I've often thought that this, as well as shipping prices from Japan, are what fuels the high doujinshi price in the US. A quick run through 100 yen stacks will net you a lot of stuff, but that stuff might not be resalable.

When it comes to doujinshi, not all the artwork featured inside was actually drawn by the artist whose name is featured on the cover. Often, they have assistants, and usually just the nice character shots or title pages are drawn by the artist, while the underlings do the rest of the dirty work. I remember talking to Mamoru Yokota about this, and he confirmed that he drew the cover and a couple of the nicer pages inside, while another drew the rest of the work. So even though a doujinshi might be plastered with Sonoda or any other artist's name, often times, they farm out the work to others similar to how many mangakas farm out the work to their assistants.

I've seen that bottom XSEED issue online before, I wasn't sure if it was doujin or not. Well, now I know, and knowing is half your battle

I'm kinda skeptical on buying doujin art in general. If most of what people come across is porn related, I rather play it safe and have no part in it.

I was surprised at how low doujin prices were after a friend went to Mandarake on a trip and said you could get em for less than $5 usually. I know resellers gotta make a profit, tho, so I don't complain unless the prices are ludicrous or something.

Ahhh, I never thought about that! I assumed most doujin work was all solo, but I suppose groups like CLAMP started with doujin, so having a team and/or assistants makes sense. Yeah, books with beautiful covers & shoddy art inside are another big pet peeve. I don't buy doujin often, but that's happened to me & it's SO disappointing.

Not all of it is porn, and even then, there are varying degrees of that. A lot of the straight stuff aimed at women has no nudity. It's just fuzzy, happy stories of two characters together. Look for doujinshi without the R18 rating and you'll find them. I've seen lots of Sailor Moon doujinshi that more or less amounted to fanfic manga.

Within the R18 rating, there's some really mild vanilla stuff, some inbetween material and then some hardcore smut. You can sometimes tell just by the cover (ie. tentacles = hardcore), but if you can, it's always better to browse.

If you want cheap doujinshi while in Japan, check out the 100 yen bins at Toranoana. I had a friend just come back from a Comiket trip and he sent back roughly 60 lbs of doujinshi and other goods back to himself.

I am not surprised that lolicon is starting to diffuse into everyone's manga collection. If you ever seen a lot to the new anime heroines, it is not much of a surprise the lolicon manga and anime is starting to spread. A lot of the new anime women are just twelve year olds dressed up as adults. It is a lot like these anorexic looking Calvin Klien models we have been seeing for almost two decades. They are usually adolescent or teenage girls dressed up as women.

It is a big hoax and a conspiracy in my opinion. The corporate media is tricking the teenage girls and adult women to buy make up, diet food, and exercise to look like twelve year olds in make up. They put out so much of the stuff guys are starting to turn on to the look. I want another Bettie Page or Jessica Rabbit to be seen in my manga titles. I stopped buying a lot of magazines and anime because the women do not look right to me. I like my women curvy. I will even take fat chicks over that anorexic look any day. I think I am going to have to do my own comics to put it out there if theses comic artists do not do better! Actually, I am working on it now.
