His iconic covers for such well-known and wonderful RPGs were gorgeous. May he rest in peace.

I never played those RPGs so I had no idea who the artist was. I'm figuring people like Shigeru Mizuki might also go sooner than later. Last interview I saw of him, he was pretty frail. But then, he fought in WW2 so he is pretty old.

What other RPGs did Hiro Isono illustrate? Other than Secret of Mana and the GameBoy Final Fantasy Adventure that is?

He mostly did the Mana/Seiken Densetsu games. But he also provided artwork 1991's Final Fantasy Adventure GameBoy game.

That's a great, ballsy cover to use in Secret of Mana. Most companies would prefer to have the characters front and centre, but this goes for scope and artful composition instead.

Coincidentally, a friend of mine is going through and playing all the classic SNES RPGs, and Secret of Mana was the first, so I played a few of the levels with him. It really is a wonderful game.

Final Fantasy Adventure is just what they called Seiken Densetsu 1 in the US.

Anyway Seiken Densetsu is one of my favorite series of all time, especially Secret of Mana.
