Animeigo's DVD/blu-ray survey

Post by usamimi »

I somehow forgot to cross post this here, but Animeigo posted this survey the other day to gauge how much interest their is in DVD vs blu-ray and pricing for some titles they're considering re-releasing from the 70s, 80s, and 90s! http://goo.gl/forms/CXw6KqzIQ2 (Also I noticed it was originally called "Otaku no video pricing survey", which doesn't surprise me that they're interested in re-releasing that, lol.) Go fill it out if you haven't already!

I took the survey and then begged for a KOR re-release.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was one they were thinking of, considering they were talking about shows from the 80s as well as "first 26 episodes" and things like that. Hopefully maybe UY as well? Though I'm not holding my breath.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Kimagure Orange Road, but Urusei Yatsura and Otaku No Video re-releases would be great too!

I think either Woodhead or one of their reps said that they would never be able to release a lengthy series like Urusei Yatsura ever again, considering the commitment and funds needed to sink into it.

I'd love to see American releases of Ashita No Joe, Aim for the Ace!, Queen Millennia, and Touch (Touch might be too long though). Those are major, historically important anime I think we should finally see releases of in North America. Some non-essential stuff I'd like to see released would be some of the Sunrise mecha anime we never got, like SPT Layzner, Round Vernian Vifam, Fang of the Sun Dougram.

Re-releases that I think we need are the stuff that never got beyond VHS or are way out of print: Crusher Joe and Genesis Survivor Gaiarth.

In my order of priority (from most important to least):

1. Anime that has NEVER been released before in the U.S.
2. Anime that never saw a DVD release in the U.S.
3. Re-releases of anime that are rare and out of print on DVD (like Crusher Joe).
4. Re-releases of old favorites (KOR, Otaku no Video) on blu-ray.

I'd also think it'd be cute if lots of people demanded a re-release of Yawara in this survey, ideally something that is broken up in such a way that they can start buying this series exactly where the old release left off.

Oh yea, something I've wanted to ask you for a while Usamimi. I remember that you were contributing something to the BGC blu-rays in the extras department as a volunteer. Did you by any chance get a free copy of the set or something like that? If so, what do you think of the set as a whole?

Well, I think these re-releases they're considering will be via Kickstarter again, so if people are willing to shell out the cash for it they'd probably do em! I do agree that it would be pretty awesome to get something like Aim for the Ace! (since the blu-rays for that just came out in Japan not too long ago). I'd love stuff that's way OOP, too, like Crusher Joe, Baoh, Miss China's Ring....that'd definitely be nice, too.

I did! I edited a BUNCH of settei scans that Mr. Woodhead was kind enough to snail-mail me for the online gallery, the on-disc gallery, and whatever else they used it for (like the packaging, I think). I was given doubles and triples of everything as payment, as well as a staff shirt and my name on the physical box along with the rest of the staff--I posted a pic here: http://forum.animepast.net/viewtopic.ph ... &&start=50 :D

As for what I think of the set as a whole....embarrassingly, I haven't sat down to watch it all yet, so I can't say. But the little I've seen so far was great. I'll get back to you when I give it a more proper watch.

I am pretty sure that they lost the license to KOR, UY, You're Under Arrest, etc. I dunno about Crusher Joe or Madox. It would be nice to see those re-released so that the DVD prices on the secondary market would finally stop being so crazy.

Oh for sure, their contracts for those ended ages ago, but there's always a possibility they could talk to them again to re-release? I dunno, I could be overly optimistic. I kinda doubt UY is one of them, simply because Viz is the one that seems to handle 90% of Shueisha's properties now (other than like...the One Piece anime, I think?) But we can dream. XD

I'd love to see a blu-ray release of Cyber City Oedo 808, but only if it has the English dub with the Rory McFarlane score. The difference between the original pop score and McFarlane's heavy metal/synth one is night and day. And, unfortunately, only the original Japanese score is available on the current DVD.

I know Cyber City is often lambasted for all the changes it received when Manga Entertainment picked it up and dubbed it, but it's still one of my favorite dubs.

I would hope that a bluray release would be versatile to even select the new musical score with the Japanese voice acting. I've certainly felt that way with Laputa. I didn't care so much about the English dub, but Joe Hisaishi's updated musical score is so much better than the original. I'd love to be able to watch the movie in Japanese with the updated musical score.
