RIP - Aging Otakus No Longer With Us

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Yeah, it's true. I have lots of friends that seem baffled I can spend 20-30 minutes cooking a meal almost every evening, but I like to point out that those microwave lasagnas or frozen pizzas take about the same amount of time to cook...

haha omg that article!

davemerrill wrote:yeah, actual fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy products, fresh cuts of meat, etc., are fairly reasonably priced. It's the Whole Foods lifestyle-focused, buzzword-festooned packaged "healthy" products that are expensive. But, you know, people don't want to prepare meals. They want to buy a pre-packaged nutrition module that fits into their preconceived notions of 'trendy' and 'healthy'. They don't want to walk around the block or do push-ups, they want some kind of 'system' that has a celebrity-endorsed workout video and an app for their phone. They can buy all this stuff and stack it on top of their treadmill, if their treadmill isn't covered in laundry, and then they feel good about themselves for "getting healthy".

And it's even worse for women... this Thrillist article is from June, but it's still pretty funny: https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/he ... -for-women
I have two words, and then another word.

Greek Yogurt and Kale.

These are the current 'magic food'

Funny thing, I recall in various versions of Earth written by several writers they use the term 'Dole Yeast', free Government 'basic minimum foodstuff' that all but the most elite, that is anyone not working FOR the Government, this was the food you ate.

meat was bad, soda was bad, eggs were bad, so on. Sounds kinda familiar. We have to ban salt from restaurant tables and nobody can have a 32 oz. cup of soda BIG GULP IS MURDER!!! This stuff was written back in the '70s, when the Population Bomb was still a thing. (Earth Will Die if the human population hits 5 billion!! Ooooooops, we're kinda way past that).

No free Government Yeast Product. Now you're supposed to buy it, a tiny cup for much more than the price of a McDonald's hamburger. IT'S GOOD FOR YOU EAT IT AND HAVE JOHN STAMOS' BABIES!!!

Eat what you want. Just don't eat too much.

I ever get to a Fuddruckers again? No more 1 pound burger and a basket of fries for me. God I miss the Fuddruckers that was here...

Yeah, sounds a lot like a product called Soylent (not to be confused with the product from the film). We got some to help with some of our calorie management, and it works very well for what it is, but we haven't replaced all of our meals and snacks with it. Just as a healthy breakfast on our way to work or dinner after late nights, etc. But man, is it pricey...

This is the best advice and the hardest to follow, for me. I swear, quitting smoking was easier than portion control.

I have only done this ... once or twice and I was a freshman in college. I think it was about the only thing I ate that day, too.

Steve, I developed lactose intolerance as soon as the government started allowing Monsanto to start injecting cows with bovine growth hormone. The crap makes cows produce more milk, but it also decreases the poor cows' lives, causes infections, and then you get pus in the milk. Vet bills pile higher this way. So then they started injecting the cows with antibiotics. These crappy antibiotics build up antibiotic tolerance and give rise to nastier viruses that are tolerant to antibiotics. They also demolish the beneficial bacteria in your gut that enables you to digest lactose. In the '90s, any amount of milk would be like playing roulette with my gut and frankly would often turn my butthole into a garden hose. I lost days of school and work. I gave up any and all dairy as a result, and erroneously took to drinking soy milk, believing that soy was healthy. It's actually an antinutrient and will actually deplete calcium from your bones, despite having calcium artificially added to that crap. That's a whole different story. What I did was to build up the good bacteria in my gut by consuming good, organic yogurt. Eventually, I could start drinking organic milk and I'd be just fine. Now that I live in Japan and they don't do that sort of crap here, I can drink milk constantly, every day, with zero problems.

I guess I'm about to go on another anti-Monsanto rant as I am prone to do. Crap like gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, and deadly peanut allergies have exploded in direct correlation to Monsanto's rise to their bioengineering empire. People are getting sick of being sick, they are saying no, and now that company is losing tons of money. Everything they do is like trying to remedy something they want to fix, but the cure is worse than the disease. They want everyone to believe that world hunger and malnutrition is not the error of human deeds and despotic governments that wish to trod upon the rights of people. No no no, you see, it's bugs and weeds. Those are what the world's problem are! Yeah, right.

Before US citizens knew what was happening, their government had given their nutritional supply over to the company that specializes in poison and gestapo-like practices. The company is responsible for Agent Orange. Need I say more? Ask some Vietnamese people about what that stuff has done. Americans have unwittingly allowed them to control not only what's on their dinner table but the entire political spectrum, which is currently moving to squash Americans' right to know what exactly it is they are eating. I won't get further into politics than that, except to say that you vote with your wallet. Companies that profit from evil stuff that hurts people, be it GMOs, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners and the like are not successful in countries that have higher levels of consumer awareness. Education is essential.

Maybe old news, but I haven't really seen this mentioned anywhere other than referring to him as "the late Roy Bruce":
Roy Carver Bruce, 36, died on Wednesday, June 25 at M.C.V. A native of Richmond, he was self-employed as a writer, was president of the Cartoon Fantasy Organization of Central Virginia, president of the Japanese Animation Network, Guest Liaison Director for Anime Mid-Atlantic, and worked with Studio Ironcat in Fredericksburg, Va. He wrote and maintained the HistoricVa.com website. He volunteered at the V.C.U. Special Collections Library. He attended Elon College and V.C.U. and had a B.A. in Philosophy. He is survived by his wife, Catherine M. Bruce; his brothers, Robert D. Bruce and John B. Bruce; sister-in-law, Carol Bruce; nephew, Jacob Bruce; and his cat, Midnight. A memorial service will be held on July 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Nelson Funeral Home on S. Laburnum. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and Maymont Foundation.

I used to swap zines and tapes with Roy back in the EDC/C/FO days. I know he was a good friend of Steve Bennett, he ran some of Steve's fan comics in his zine.
