Interviews with animators or artists

Post by _D_ »

Of late, I've been trying to archive as many of the old interview shows as possible. I don't know if this is considered lost footage or else just misplaced. Now with the death of Monkey Punch, I have to look closer at several airings of his movies or specials for any interviews that might have been shown. I think there were some Tezuka bits on the Blue Blink transmissions but since he died during production, I could be wrong. I have a number of interviews with Tezuka (among others), as well as the memorial stuff done after his death, though in one case, the tape is unplayable and will have to be baked to try to restore it. My latest transfer was of the 5 part Leiji Matsumoto series for NHK on the history of SF Manga, broadcast in (I believe) in 1982. There were discussions with Tezuka, Takao Saito (Golgo 13), Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009), the woman artist of Toward Terra, among others whom I cannot identify. I have been saving many old specials as they also had interviews with voice actors, artists, directors, etc. These would be great to see subbed eventually. But that will have to be left to others as I cannot do that. Archiving this stuff for others in the future is tough enough...

I've actually got some televised recordings of Anno and Ohata on the SciFi channel in the 90's that they did interviews with/overdubbed their voices to english, and I got that Tim Eldred Yamato documentary and one other that you might be interested in. If you want it PM me and I can put them on a google drive file.

If you want to see some great interviews with manga artists, the NHK series "Manben" is where it's at: Naoki Urasawa interviews a whole bunch of currently working manga-ka, including veterans like Takao Saito, Junji Ito, Ryoichi Ikegami, Moto Hagio, Kazuhiro Fujita, and younger artists as well. There's a surprising variety of techniques on display. Most of the series has been fansubbed and is up on Dailymotion.

Probably not Toriyama though. I have never seen anything with him. Even when they had him on Dr. Slump long ago, it wasn't him doing his own voice. Camera shy or what?

Yeah, NHK was always good for doing interesting projects. Too bad most of their old stuff ended up being destroyed apparently. I'm very slowly trying to archive things like Child of the Sun Esteban with the original cast as they apparently destroyed the original cast recordings. Too bad but at the time I can see why...there was no reason for keeping any of it since there was no video market. Many studios and stations around the world did likewise. Guess they are all kicking themselves now...

Yes, I have the World of Leiji Matsumoto documentary. I had the original VHS copy that Tim has. I still haven't gotten around to getting back to him on other stuff that might be of interest to him. I do give things to others to post but it's been erratic the past year with me returning to work. I still occasionally pull out more tapes to cap for a number of people. Some tapes though are too old to play back. Pity. But there is a lot of stuff to do yet. Also a pity I can't understand Japanese, not even enough to digsub any of these recordings. Other than the odd word or phrase, I'm hopeless with that language. None of the computer programs I am familiar with will work either. I guess the spoken word is just too much for them. Ah well...

From what I gather (through the folks' research at Kanzenshuu), Toriyama is almost notorious for avoiding appearances. Interestingly enough, even when Dr. Slump and Dragonball were being published, he worked out of his home studio in Nagoya and had his work couriered and faxed to his editor at Shuueisha for publication, which is incredibly unique, as most artists usually relocated to Tokyo.

I need to check out this Manben series - I've seen screen shots before and it has always seemed really interesting.

Wish we could get the 5 part NHK History of SF Manga c. 1982 hosted by Leiji Matsumoto fansubbed. Lots of interesting guests like Tezuka, Takao Saito, Ishinomori, etc. I have not seen that one one Youtube or anywhere else. Probably another one off that NHK promptly destroyed the original footage of...

Apologize for my ignorance, but can anyone here explain to me why did NHK destroy their own footages? I have been a NHK World audience for a long time, and one complain people always have is that they never releases their series on DVD. But destroy their footages?

Anyway, here is a short documentary about the production of the original Gundam series that NHK World broadcasted a few months back:

From what I've heard, it was a matter of space. Back before digital, many broadcast stations would periodically dump/destroy old footage, since it was on actual reels or tapes that took up a lot of storage space over time. Now with digital, its a lot easier to manage. This makes archiving old things a pain though, because if a master copy of something was destroyed, then you have to cross your fingers a fan recorded it and kept it all this time...
