Japanese Music - J-Pop, enka, J-Rock, Japanese hip-hop, etc

I don't listen to as much Japanese music as I used to. It used to be exclusively what I listened to, but I don't care for it as much anymore. Gackt got me into J-music actually, when I saw the Mizerable PV on television. From like 15 until senior year of high school, I was known as J-rock Girl. LOL I dressed very dark and listened to Gackt, Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey, Janne da Arc, X-Japan, etc. I don't listen to J-rock much anymore, and I liked Gackt's older work, his newer stuff has been a bit too pop for me (minus the themes he did for games and tokusatsu shows). After high school I was into K-pop until about the time DBSK hit the scene, then K-pop sounded like everything here in the states, so it's most miss and very little hit now.

As far as J-music now, m-flo is my favorite. I also enjoy Monkey Majik, Capsule, Shiina Ringo, Tokyo Jihen, and the occasional Utada Hikaru. I usually listen to opening and ending themes from favorite anime, and I've been loving listening to older music, like from Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, and Ranma 1/2. Love love love it.

I'm more into K-Indie currently as far as anything modern. I also love trip-hop music. I need upbeat stuff when I draw.

I honestly only listen to anime OP/ED songs when it comes to Japanese music, particularly rock music.

A lot of people I know are the same way. Because I work with the Asian entertainment industry, I listen to K-Pop as well, I covered S.E.S., Fin.k.l. and Baby VOX in the '90s and in 2008, my first book was on DBSK. But since I was working with Avex/Rhythm Zone, it was focused on their Japanese music but I was able to integrate the K-Pop by covering the worldwide fandom.



It was the largest project that I worked on that involved people from all over the world....





















But I like your taste in music and the fact that you listen to different things. I cover music all over the world, so I'm always open to music trends from all over the globe.

That is awesome kndy! I admit I like DBSK's Korean music to their Japanese ones, but I thoroughly enjoyed their themes for One Piece, and I liked them when they were still together, I don't really listen to them separately anymore. It's nice to see someone who is familiar with the K-pop in the 90's.

And thank you, I often play some music when I stream drawing art live, and everyone always wants my playlist. Haha!

oh, GOSH, I was nutso for Japanese music when I was in high school. I still love a lot of Japanese music, but I'm not as fanatical about it as I once was. XD;;

I got into the Japanese music scene with X-Japan, as many people did...I soon discovered Bo0wy (the band that influenced X-Japan the most) and from there discovered Tomoyasu Hotei, who I still adore and follow his work. (I have almost his entire discography, save for singles, just because that would get pretty pricy.)

I used to be super into Jrock and visual kei (Malice Mizer, Glay, Luna Sea, Dir en grey, Buck Tick, Kagrra, Dué le Quartz, L'arc~en~ciel, hide, TM Revolution, Siam Shade, Zard, etc etc). I still like most of those, but a lot of the ones I used to really love have broken up or just don't release much anymore. I still listen to their music off and on, as well as Capsule, Perfume, Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen, Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Go!Go!7188, Stance Punks, Ellegarden, Rip Slyme, Pe'z, Orange Range, Zwei, etc etc. I have fairly eclectic musical tastes, so I listen to a random mix of everything, really.
