The Show Off Your Old Days Stuff Thread

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Haha, Dragon Pink is a friggin' riot! I always show it to people who I think will appreciate how over-the-top wrong it is.

I don't know how to do spoiler text here, but let's just say the part that involved harvesting "potion" with a mushroom -- my god that was bad!

Yeah, that show is a blast.

Ryoran, I was trying to pawn off some VHS tapes on you in the Christmas thread. Not sure if you didn't see them or if you just don't want them. :D

This reminds me, there was a store around here that was selling Ellcia for cheap, but I never got around to picking it up. That's a fantasy title, but a lot of people complained about Umetsu's bizarre character designs.

That's so cool, Ryoran! :O I found a Doraemon wallet at Goodwill once, but I ended up selling it a few years ago because I never used it. (It was too small, probably made for kids, lol.)

I wanted to show off some of my VHS tapes that I have found recently.

Image
These I got off of ebay cheap in a box lot

Image
Three of the BGC tapes are the blue tapes and have the data readout sheets

Image
More Animeigo goodness

Image
ADV Hard Shell Beauties

Image
Compiler 1 and 2

Image
Streamline Pictures

Image
A few more

If anyone has lists of the numbering system on the streamline VHS tapes I would greatly appreciate the help. I have a pretty complete list now, just need to fill in the blanks. My biggest problems with my list is the Robotech tapes. They put out so many versions. I will post my lists some time this week.

CLUTCH CARGO! I wasn't aware Streamline released that on VHS! That cartoon was so extremely low budget. They super imposed the voice actors' mouths over the animated characters' mouths to save money on animation costs (I guess), and the result is extremely disturbing. If you watch the special features disc for The Incredibles DVD, they pay homage to Clutch Cargo with a very retro-looking cartoon featuring Mr. Incredible, Frozone, and some weird sidekicks...

Nice collection, nordstar! I remember being jealous of a friend of mine who had all of Bubblegum Crisis back in the day...I think that ws the first time I'd ever seen colored VHS tapes. AnimEigo always had nice looking releases! (I have a set of the Kimagure Orange Road OAVs in cases like those that I rescued from a local video store going out of business...I still have them because I can't seem to convince myself to get rid of 'em, even though we no longer have a VCR! )

That's the first release of "Robot Carnival", right? My bf has a copy, but it looks like this: http://www.theanimegallery.com/gallery/ ... t-carnival I assume that was the cover they used after it was released theatrically in some areas?

I've never heard of Clutch Cargo before! (Or if I had, I'd forgotten...) Wow, that is...something! I looked it up and apparently they released it on DVD?! I can't imagine who would go out of their way to buy something like that on DVD...

The Animeigo tapes are awesome looking. A lot of the ADV tapes I have are also colored. One of them is neon yellow with red silk screened label and red hubs. I haven't watched all of Kimagure Orange Road yet but have seen a few episodes and really want to watch the rest. I am pretty sure that this is the first release of Robot Carnival the case is lower print quality like all the other early first releases and does not have a UPC. We really need a R1 DVD/Blu-Ray of it.

Clutch Cargo was done by Streamline as an Archive Series of very early made for US TV cartoons. They released 3 different shows that I know of. Each show had 2 tapes. The other two shows were Space Angel and Colonel Bleep. Space Angel is from cartoonist Alex Toth and has a really great 50's space style to it and uses the same mouth animations just like Clutch Cargo. Colonel Bleep was the first Cartoon on US TV that was made for TV and was not a port of a comic or other franchise. Streamline Pictures was head by of course Carl Macek but his other partner was Jerry Beck http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Beck. Jerry is an animation historian and has worked for WB, Nickelodeon and Disney. His new site is here: http://cartoonresearch.com/

Nordstar, that is an awesome collection. I also remember the multi-colored VHS tapes. I think my Those Who Hunt Elves ones were white. I need to go through my tapes at some point and cull the ones I have on DVD. How was Plastic Little? I bought it, but its been low priority in my backlog.

Video Comics! My Zillion tapes were from them, don't think I had any others. Robot Carnival is a classic, so is Cagliostro.
