The Time Capsule

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

I'm not sure, since it's run by a small group of people. I know that at least 2 of them feverishly collect old back-issues of Nakayoshi for their archives, so they at least have a love/understanding of the old 90s shoujo stuff. XD

I started going to convention after 2000, and I haven't seen anyone offering sketches like these anymore. Though I do have one from a Korean manhwa artist, You Hyun, I was able to get at Comic Con Intl. in 2004.

I think it depends on the artist and/or how much time they have versus how many people show up. In 2002 and 2003 at Sakura-con, I got sketches from Hiroshi Nagahama--but both times, the line for autographs weren't terribly long, so he had plenty of time to do drawings for everyone. I think the last time I got a sketch from an artist was in 2008, when Nobuteru Yuuki came to Sakura-con. The line ended up getting kind of long, so after a while, they decided to force him to stop doing drawings and just autograph things--I was the VERY LAST person he did a drawing for (lucky!!). Here's the two sketches Nagahama-san did for me:

Saionji, inside the old release of the Utena movie

And on the bottom of the final old-release Utena box set (he did Saionji again because he recognized me from the previous year--apparently he never got requested to do Saionji like, EVER, I was the only one who ever asked, so...naturally, I said he should draw him again! XD)

Yuuki-san drew inside of my Chrono Cross Ultimania Guidebook--I haven't taken a picture of that, I really should. He did a sketch of Harle for me because I told him she was one of my favorite characters. I really do need to take a picture of that...I also got him to autograph my special edition of the Escaflowne movie (which Ikue Otani had already signed for me in the past). I think it's just harder for artists to do sketches now because most cons have tons of people, and it would be super hard for them to draw for every single person, sadly...

To be fair, most of those have very special circumstances. (The Akane from Magic Users Club is one that I love and also annoys me every time I look at it (it's a goofy story)) Altho, I'm a little impressed with the Tanemura one myself. She was really sweet. I have a pre-printed board that I got from Viz at ComicCon a ways back, but she was at AnimeFEST last year and was doing sketches in the autograph line until staff decided to keep her from burning out so they switched to "autographs only". They actually decided to do that 2 people in FRONT of me, but I know most of the staff so they kept things going until me. She actually did a few BEAUTIFUL drawings in a panel that she then gaveaway to people who knew trivia about her works. Made me sad I didn't know more obscure details about her. XD

I've also got a poster drawing that Junichi Sato did for our Iron Artist panel. It's cute. Keitarou Arima did a really nice one years ago, but someone else wanted that one WAY too much. But I respect that. I like the Ayeka, but that's inside a manga volume, the one on display (at my house) is a full color print of Tsunami that I got. (I love Ayeka from the main cast, but my overall favorite from Tenchi is probably Tsunami)

My "holy grail" is to get a Belldandy from Kosuke Fujishima, if I ever get that then I'll be SET.

It's funny...I kept all my autograph/sketches but I gave away as donations to other clubs or conventions for giveaways of my J-Pop autographed posters or memorabilia. Aside from the autographs or sketches, its a must (if I can get it), a picture of the person signing the autograph or a picture of or with them.
