Started my two new anime of the season, Attack on Titan and Gargantia. My counterpart is obsessed with Titan and is ready to go out and pick up the manga to go with the show. I like the mysteries surrounding the world and am looking forward to seeing the backstory of the titans. Gargantia reminds of all those public-domain scifi stories I've been binging in the car on the way to work. It also gives me an Asimov-vibe, which is always a good thing.
Old-school wise I'm rewatching Orguss for the first time since the 90s. Only got through about the first dozen episodes on VHS back then, and I plan on actually finishing it this time. Haruhiko Mikimoto draws the cutest girls.

I finally gave Chihayafuru a try, since I had several friends who liked it...wow! I didn't realize a series about a poem card game could be so intense!
It really sucked me in, I've already breezed through the first season. I'll probably start the second one soon.

Polar Bear Cafe. It amuses me so XD
Re: What are you Watching?
Okay, it took me a couple of weeks to watch the last two episodes of Gunsmith Cats. I think if it had been a movie instead it would have been considered one of the better action anime of the 90s. As an OVA it's a decent time waster, but the episodic structure didn't really help it, imo, especially since each episode somewhat led into the other. Also, it's only 3 episodes, and it's not a seamless experience either. That said, episode 2 had some pretty fantastic animation for a 90s OVA and is a highlight of the series. I miss the days when car chase scenes were animated mostly by hand. CGI car chases and CGI aerial dogfights are always a deflating experience for me.

Re: What are you Watching?
Didn't they condense all the Gunsmith Cats OAVs into a movie at one point? I seem to remember that from somewhere...
I was browsing idly through Huluplus today and discovered they had Gunbuster (the movie version) up, so I watched that this afternoon. I hadn't seen Gunbuster since '99, so it was fun to watch, though something was up with Hulu's screen formatting or something--every time they had to show subtitles on the lower part of the screen, or when there was 2 sets of subtitles (like for dialog and a song playing at the same time), the dialog subtitles would always get cut off. :/ Annoying as hell, I feel sorry for anyone unfamiliar with the story who tries to watch it, they might end up getting lost.
I'd never seen the "movie" version of Gunbuster, but it wasn't bad. Parts felt a little rushed because of the condensing, but I guess I didn't mind too much since I've already seen it before, anyway.

If they have, it certainly was never released in the U.S. The ADV DVD releases always released it as 3 episodes.usamimi wrote:Didn't they condense all the Gunsmith Cats OAVs into a movie at one point? I seem to remember that from somewhere...

The anime version of Gunsmith Cats, released 1995 by Kodansha/VAP/Tokyo Broadcasting and a year later in North America by ADV Films, is an original animation story. Was originally released as 3 individual videos, 'Neutral Zone', 'Swing High!' and 'High Speed Edge'. In 1997 it was compiled as a single movie, 'Bulletproof' and re-released with new packaging.

Saw the third Eva movie last night. Eh....it was odd that's for sure. I don't remember the last two being this weird.

We finished Yatterman vol. 11 last night. Man, that show gets weirder and weirder! The Yatter robot ostrich (or whatever it is) lays an egg, then the egg hatches open to reveal a robot that plays a drum roll on a snare drum, then the egg closes back up and flies back into the ostrich's butt, then the ostrich pukes out flying campfire rice cookers that dump goopy mochi or something on the ground to stop tye Doronbo's robot. So weird!
Also, we are on the final DVD of Animeigo's Yawara box set. NUTS, we want to watch the whole series, beyond the first season!

Re: What are you Watching?
Since amassing a collection of old anime VHS very quickly, I hadn't gotten to watch most of them yet. Finally did so after all this moving I've been doing lately. I chose Catgirl Nuku Nuku as my first one to watch, and man, it was right up my alley. I'm amazed I never saw it sooner. I felt my younger anime discovering self come out watching it, felt good man. I stopped after the first episode to pace myself a bit.
Can't wait to finish it up.
