One Tumblr user set out to bring those underappreciated backgrounds to the forefront by displaying photos of anime backgrounds with the main characters digitally removed, and boy is it eye-opening. From real world Tokyo locations recreated in painstaking detail, to futuristic cityscapes that tower up and sprawl out as far as the eye can see, to almost photo-realistic close-ups of everyday items, this Tumblr blog showcases the unsung beauty of the best anime backgrounds.

Anime Backgrounds: True Works of Art
Re: Anime Backgrounds: True Works of Art
Wish he had included some TV animation but this seems to be mostly theatrical or special OVA stuff. Sorta like comparing Pokemon TV animation to Pokemon theatrical animation which has had some gorgeous settings over the years. If you have more money of course you can make some very nice work. Much harder to do on a limited budget. But thanks for the look. Any of this out in art books or film "coffee table" books?

Ah, yes, I reblogged his post on Akira for the Anime Nostalgia Tumblr. I wish he'd post some more old-school stuff, I looked through his posts so far and more of them are recent than 80s/90s. But he did just start this recently, it looked like, so maybe he'll get to more eventually. (He also might be limited to what DVDs/blu-rays he owns, unless he's using stuff he's downloaded.) It's a cool idea for a blog, though, I like it.
Some seem to forget to appreciate the settings some of these movies/oavs/whatever take in...they can be really detailed and beautiful!

They usually have backgrounds in the end sections of most artbooks. I've yet to see one completely dedicated to them._D_ wrote:Wish he had included some TV animation but this seems to be mostly theatrical or special OVA stuff. I'm really fascinated by architecture as well as backgrounds. One of the reasons I have some of the settei artbooks of the Tenchi Muyo series, the houses and designs of the ships are pretty amazing.
