What are you Watching?

Yeah, "Woman Called Fujiko Mine" came out just recently...I think it started last year? It's neat, it's a prequel series about how Fujiko met Lupin & the others. It's very cool so far, I definitely recommend it! Funimation has it streaming for free on regular Hulu, too.

I watched this on Funimation when it was first streaming. Such an odd but interesting Lupin show. I like the vintage style of it, even if the plot was a little weird at times. And what an opening!

Yeah, the opening was definitely different from most Lupin OPs I've seen! I just finished the series today, I think my only gripe is that it's SO short (13 eps?!). It felt like the last couple of eps was a lot of talking and explaining to wrap it all up. Other than that, I thought it was fantastic. Midway and to the end, the series has some style/direction that reminds me a lot of Ikuhara (Utena, Penguindrum)--a lot of symbolism, psychological themes, ect. But I love that kinda stuff so I enjoyed it a lot. It was a really neat take on the Lupin franchise, and now I really want to get the DVD or blu-ray set when it comes out. X3

Just watched an episode of the Saban dub of the WMT 1987 version of "Little Women" online at the "Smile of a Child" Christian children's TV channel. It's always interesting to find out what old family anime these Christian channels sometimes randomly dig up. They're also running the Swiss Family Robinson anime.

I wish my local Christian channels would run Little Women, Swiss Family Robinson, or even The Bush Baby, which did air briefly in Canada on TVO. Instead we always get good ol' overused Superbook.

About The Women Called Fujiko Mine...y'all might want to check out Michiko to Hatchin, which is by the same director, Sayo Yamamoto. She's really got a unique sense of style. Funimation will also be releasing Michiko to Hatchin on DVD (and hopefully BD)...sometime this year, anyway.

Watching the remastered "Howl's Moving Castle" and "My Neighbor Totoro" on Blu.

Also, watched the Aniplex, Inc. release of "Gurren Lagann", same as the Bandai Entertainment release but different swag and different soundtrack included on the box set release.

I grew up watching Tatsunoko's Superbook and Flying House on CBN as a kid. They showed it to us often in Sunday school, too. My good friend in Sunday school is the one that introduced me first to Voltron and then to Robotech, actually. No kids I knew at my elementary school were into these shows, that I know of.

I had no idea there was a Swiss Family Robinson anime! I freaking loved the Disney movie, especially the end when they are defending their mountain from the pirates. I've always suspected that the scene when the kids are going through the swamp and are attacked by the snake must have inspired the trash compactor scene in Star Wars: A New Hope when Luke is attacked by the Dianoga and dragged under the water.

As for what I've watched lately, we are now up to DVD 14 with Yatterman with my daughter. I hope to watch some more Record of Lodoss War and Rose of Versailles this weekend.

Watched Zoids New Century Zero, since I never saw all of it back when it was on Toonami. I was enjoying it. Thought I'd see how much the DVDs were and HOLY COW!!! Almost $80 per volume. Yikes! :c

Just got Shout! Factory's $15 set of 3 GAIKING compilation movies and watched a bit. Amazingly, this new dubbed version (by William Winckler, of TEKKAMAN! THE SPACE! KNIGHT! fame), produced in 2008 or 2009, is every bit as awful and stilted as the old Jim Terry dub of the TV series. Japanese names are retained, but there are some odd casting choices (the Chinese jet pilot dude is played by SF writer David Gerrold) and the scripts are terrible - our hero Sanshiro says "heck" every other line.

Still, it's that special, crazy, sketchy mid-70s Toei super robot animation, and it's pretty cheap. I'm having fun watching, and will probably grab the similar STARZINGER compilation that's coming out in August.

I tried watching the first episode of Tenchi: War on Geminar and for the life of me couldn't get into it. I stopped with 10 mins in the show left. Don't plan on giving it a chance...

I find for me trying new anime, if I can make it through the first episode, I'll watch the rest.

Thanks for reminding me about this! Did they release any other old school anime mecha series recently aside from Gaiking? I really want to watch this as it was one of my favorite Shogun Warriors toys (my favorite was Danguard Ace...) and Combatra.
