Hmmm... Well, if this is a shot to also get the show released subbed, I'll be all for it. Not having grown up with Starblazers, I'm not big on thinking of Koudai-kun as "Derek Wildstar."
I had doubts and questions about Yamato 2199, mostly due to the sheer overkill of throwing MOE visual stereotypes into the mix so there can be more women on the Yamato.
I was famously over-the-top incensed over the nurse, with her lolicon fetish gear variation of the standard uniform.
Well, I'm still a bit uncomfortable over it but the production has completely won me over. It's 1979 all over again for me.
Now, a person that Dave and I both know (he much moreso than me) made a statement about his frustration about how all the burning blood character interaction is gone, how tame and mellow and hollow everyone on Yamato seems. Okita isn't surrogate father figure to Kodai. Sanada isn't beloved surrogate Big Brother. There's no manly rival action between Shima and Kodai.
All of this is true. It does bother me. Frankly, it seems all the Hot Blood is over with the Gamilas! My GOSH there's so much story going on with them! Grief, it's almost "can't we just have 26 episodes of the Gamilas doing stuff?" at some points.
And maybe that's the hook. Maybe the idea of "You know the basics, now check THIS out!" should be the selling point. That might not be for the best in the long run.
Well, like this. One thing about Original Yamato, everything that happened, with the exception of a couple of interventions by Starsha, was Earthmen Doing Stuff. Earth built the Yamato, built the Wave Motion Engine (with Iscandarian plans), developed the Wave Motion Gun, and so on. In Yamato 2199, Earth built the Wave Motion Engine but it would not work without the 'spark plug' Iscandar provided. Navigation completely provided by Iscandar. All well and good, but does that mean Earth CANNOT field any more warp capable spaceships without Iscandar providing cores?
There are events in Episode 16 that makes me wonder if maybe Earth can manufacture the WME core, but it's not a key part of the episode so it's brushed over.
I do wonder what the Yamato 2199 staff will do if they get the green light for remaking the Comet Empire story. How much they've planned ahead.
Here are some quick thoughts. My approach to this series was how I approached "Battlestar Galactica" or even every new "Doctor" for a "Dr. Who" series. I'm always interested to see how things are compared to their older counterpart and so far, I have not been disappointed (as I have enjoyed the "Battle Galactica" series minus the final season and still enjoy "Dr. Who").
As for "Yamato 2199", For a modern animated TV series, it is rare these days to see a series that a studio puts so much into production. While character designs are different from the Yamato many of us grew up with, this new series does deliver in beautiful visuals for a TV series. Vibrant colors, well-detailed backgrounds and the first thing that came into my mind was..."Production I.G. must be involved because they are one of the studios that I know, goes all out for TV series" and they are one of the companies listed for anime production. Mechanic design is awesome and what I enjoy the most is how they brought back some big names from the old school years to work on this anime series.
I like the fresh look from Yuki Nobuteru but I also like the fact that veteran Maeda Minoru ("Dr. Slump", "Dragon Ball Z", "Touch") was involved with the art direction. And the series utilizes five for mechanical design including Tamamori Junichiro, Yamane Kimotoshi (who did the mechanical design for "Gundam Seed", "Cowboy Bebop", "Eureka 7: Astral Ocean", etc.), Kobayashi Makoto ("Gravion", "Last Exile", "Steamboy"), Ishizu Yasushi ("Dirty Pair", "Crusher Joe: The OVA's", "Dangaioh") andIzubuchi Yutaka ("Assemble Insert", ""Mobile Suit Gundam 0080", "Panzer World Galient", "RahXephon", "Patlabor").
But I really have to check out more episodes. But those were my initial thoughts on episode 1.

Don't skip around looking for the 'cool' episodes. Everything builds on what has gone on previously.
My big question is, given how strong, powerful, varied the Gamilas empire is, I really don't see them being stupid enough to drag the Yamato to their very heart of Empire with the intent of finally defeating Yamato.
I mean, I already have a huge idea on what would trigger Kodai's 'Victory tastes like ashes' speech, it's such an obvious setup. If it DOESN'T happen as I suspect I'll be shocked and surprised.
People smarter than I would insert that 'scroll over' spoiler thing and spell it out. I'm not that smart.
